Thanks

Thanks for the "thanks"  :) It's been fun, and mind-boggling. -Anagram 12:41, 26 March 2006 (AKST)

Wheatgrams

I wanted to thank you, Sparkit, for your Wheatgram and answering me in that way in the chat. I'm not quite sure how to send one yet, but I figured you would get this.

I also wanted to thank you for sharing your generous heart and talented skills in all that you do for all of us here. It's remarkable! Hope you are able to replenish just as much as you are giving out. (ReWoven 13:49, 2 April 2006 (AKDT))

You are most welcome, ReWoven! You did this talk page thing just right. (Here's a page with some info about Talk pages. I think I wrote it after I left the message on your talk page.) As far as replenishing... LOL... it's taken damn near 55 years, but I think I'm getting the hang of it. Though I've known it all along, I resisted for a long time -- it's alone time that charges my batteries. Sparkit 15:44, 2 April 2006 (AKDT)
You're alone time is what replenishes you? OK, then bye. lol ReWoven 17:30, 2 April 2006 (AKDT)
Geez, I hope that didn't come off as, "Leave me alone," because that is not at all how I feel. Sparkit 18:39, 2 April 2006 (AKDT)
No, it didn't come off that way. That was my attempt at humor. On an aside...I just replied to your message, but I think I replied to it in my 'Talk'.....I don't know quite where to leave these, so have been just going to your page and clicked the "Thanks" edit button, but now I don't see my responses. Is that the correct way to do it? 19:17, 2 April 2006 (AKDT)
Ok, Now I see where I'm suppose to leave my messages to you...under the title heading. ReWoven 19:20, 2 April 2006 (AKDT)
ROTFL I shoulda picked up that humor, 'cause that's the sort of thing I would say.
It sounds like you've discovered "section editing". To show the whole page when editing, you click the edit link at the top of the page, but you can edit just a section (often much easier) by clicking the edit link next to the header.
As far as which page on whose page (yours or mine) to leave messages. There isn't a "correct" way, it's a matter of personal style. I usually respond first on my talk page and then copy/paste what I've written onto yours. That way, you get the fun "you have messages banner" and don't need to monitor my talk page for a response. It's helpful to state your druthers about this on the top of your talk page, like my rather non-commital "Most of the time I respond both here and on your talk page." --Sparkit 04:05, 3 April 2006 (AKDT)
I tried doing a search for the 'Get Well' Card for Jimbob, but couldn't get a result. Could I bother you for the link to it please, so that I can post it....seems from what Esther was saying today, he may be down for some time. Thanks again!--ReWoven 14:11, 3 April 2006 (AKDT)
It's at Get well, Jimbob. Sparkit 15:31, 3 April 2006 (AKDT)

Fancy!

My, my. Aren't we getting FANCY with our User page! Looks great. Now I'll have to try to out-do you. Too bad you can't embed Flash smile (Unsigned by User:J-Walk

hehe Dueling user pages? User page of the week? There's no end to this stuff. (I knew it could be done with HTML tables, but I wanted to do it with wiki mark up, and it's finally making sense to me.) --Sparkit 17:18, 26 March 2006 (AKST)

Workspace

Your desk is entirely too neat, Annette. If you need some clutter, just let me know. I have plenty on hand that I can FedEx to you at the drop of a hat. --Toad 18:45, 26 March 2006 (AKST)

You realize I cleaned it up before taking that shot? bigblink Besides, I learned long ago that if you leave paperwork out on the desk overnight, it breeds! Swear to god. If you put it in drawers or boxes or notebooks, it doesn't though.
I'll pass on the clutter offer. I really do have plenty already. --Sparkit 19:29, 26 March 2006 (AKST)

User pages - new strategy?

Howdy!

Now that I understand namespaces etc. better than the first few days we put this thing up, I'd like to see what you think of this idea:

  • For listeners / users, all 'normal' pages should redirect to the User:xxxxxx page. For example, the 'normal' Jimbob page now redirects to my User namespace. So does 'Jim Kloss'. I did that for Esther and Sol too, so 'Esther Golton' points to User:Esther

Here's the reasoning (which I suspect you already figured out long before I did) - people are getting confused about where their page is, which one they edit, etc. and surfers aren't sure which is the 'official' page. But even more importantly, because of the messaging nature of the Discussion page, it's important that people know whenever they're reading about a person, they click on "Discussion" and they are in contact with them (via the "You have new messages" notice.

Whatcha think? Esther and Ann were confused, didn't know where to leave comments so the person would get "You have new messages" notice etc. I know the major disadvantage is there's no longer a 'public page' where anyone can write about you (and they really shouldn't be writin on your User: page) but I think I'd rather see strangers writing on my User: page than have people constantly wondering about which is the "real" Jimbob page.  ????????????

Oh, heck, I forgot the most important reason: I plan on doing 'special' stuff on userpages in the User: namespace. For example, I could have a section listing that user's favorite artists as determined by their rankings. For an idea of what I'm talking about, in Chat (or What's Playing) click on the currently playing artist's red link. Notice how the page (which doesn't exist) automatically shows all the albums etc we have for that artist? You can still edit the page and put whatever you might want, but any page in the Artists: namespace causes my program to try and fill in album/song info from the music database. It's sort of un-wiki-like since the user can't edit that, but I also think it's kind of a useful hybrid of wiki and database.

P.S. Did some double major overhauling of the stuff I'm writing that may have stabilized chat. Getting closer to having all the 'prototypes' done. Notice in the Chat there is now a 5-star rating system. Feel free to click and use but know that whatever ratings you give *will* get wiped out as I'll need to init the database at some point when we migrate the old site rankings to the new site. (No, I'm not going to run concurrent sites when the day comes that we're ready to shut the old one down. When I pull the plug on the old one I'll migrate its data to this one and that will be the end of the old site.)

Jimbob 02:06, 27 March 2006 (AKST)

I've been thinking about this, too, and yesterday morning started What's under the hood? to explain the namespace and category organization, as well as talk pages. And the ediquittes (sp?) on each type. Woke up thinking about it again, before even reading this message.
Among other confusions, when I was first playing at wikipedia, I kept seeing "see talk page" in edit summaries and I looked all over the pages for a link named "talk". It's why I've put a link to my talk page right at the top of my user page. Can we label that tab/link "talk" rather than "discussion"? That would help, too. (The other big confusion is creating a page. See Feature requests for a suggestion on that.)
We added to the confusion by making what I call "Wheathead pages" - pages about Wheatheads in the main namespace. (I'll redirect mine shortly.)
Anyhow, with only a half cup of coffee in me, I understand where you are going with this, and I believe it will work well. As far as being unwiki-link. Who the f--- cares? What we have here is an awesome customization.
I know you won't run concurrent sites. There's (natural) anxiety in the air about transistioning. Anagram and Rickhap have been particularly helpful with easing some jitters. Which brings me to another idea. Would you take a few minutes for an interview? A sort of Q&A on the state-of-the project. I can prepare some questions, but won't do so until you say you'll answer them.bigblink Either by phone, or on wiki page. There are some questions that are being asked repeatedly.
Regarding migrating listerner ratings: Is it possible to map an old site username's ratings to a new site username? For example, over here I'm "Sparkit", over there I'm "Makin it up as i go". (Possibly by changing the name in the Jasper database?) Or am I S.O.L.? (OK, that's one of the interview questions.) Sparkit 04:03, 27 March 2006 (AKST)
'nother comment. J-Walk suggest on The Mill page that we move that to a discussion page for clarity. Today I'll move that and some others of that nature. Sparkit 04:07, 27 March 2006 (AKST)
Quick reply - got your note:
  1. interview possible, best to do it on a page here and I'll reply on that page
  2. I plan to migrate almost all the data, yes, usernames will translate to new site IF PEOPLE HAVE SET UP A USER PROFILE HERE. We're still a few weeks(?) from that. (Upcoming house concert will shoot down about 1 week of development for me and also work at Talkeetna Travel.)
  3. Okay to move to a page
Now the real important thing - it's so cool that you're using the WWR system variables and playing around. But please do not include any template or any of the WWR system variables on 'normal' pages yet. Here's why: I'm actively dorking in the code. If I break something, or have a code syntax error, it will break every page that references a WWR system variable. This is happening frequently. I'm trying to keep my breaking things localize to What's Playing and Chat and a few others. The rest of the site should generally work okay as long as it's not using my variables.
Thanks. Gonna go back to the code now. Cheers!
  1. 1. Interview questions will be ready in the morning.
  2. 2. Cool! And you even mapped "Makin it up as i go" to "Sparkit"! Thanks.
  3. 3. I moved all those "hello", "goodnight", "The Mill" pages to talk pages. Also, what I think is a simple explanation in the FAQ, plus Talk pages page with a more detailed explanation.
It's actually J-Walk who made the template(s) with your variables. He got the message and removed the code.
Later. Sparkit

Recipes

So much for the Wheathead Cookbook, eh? It would have been fun to have a book, but I think the Category:Recipes area is much better. Everyone can contribute on their own, and look -- it even gets published before 2008! I'll add the ones that I have collected when I get some time. There were some good, creative ones. For now, off to work! Sol 06:15, 27 March 2006 (AKST)

I still think a printed Wheathead Cookbook would be a great gift for all our non-Wheathead friends and relatives. I'd get at least a half dozen. The wiki is going to make even more recipes available for it. It might be easy to put together, too, by using the Printable page option, make a PDF, then using Acrobat Pro to combine docs or place the PDFs into InDesign. or some such. Sparkit 07:31, 27 March 2006 (AKST)
I'd buy a printed Wheathead Cookbook (probably at least 5-6 copies) to send to non-Internet-abled friends/relatives. -Anagram 20:15, 29 March 2006 (AKST)

From KLAW

Sparkit, thank you and everyone involved for this soon to be masterpiece. KLAW

You are most welcome, KLAW. It's great fun for me, and think folks will enjoy it. Sparkit 18:52, 27 March 2006 (AKST)

test

Template:Welcome1

Just a quick thank you

It's such a pleasure working with you. You know I can't keep up with everything you're doing and vice-versa. But I cry with joy knowing that as I'm reading some arcane wiki code or figuring out the database structure or thinking about how to integrate the EJs, you're doing equally useful and inspired stuff elsewhere. I also greatly appreciate your expertise in being able to use Recent Changes etc. to figure out what I've done and whether it's important enough to respond to or link to elsewhere in the system. The fact that you and I and JWalk and others are actively molding this site into a useful and eventually easy-to-use resource without having to make conference calls and sit in endless management meetings is testament to the incredible power of the wiki concept.

Thank you. I look forward to the day when perhaps we can all meet and have a big group hug and then re-live "the good old days" when we were madly developing this thing together. thanks Jimbob 14:42, 28 March 2006 (AKST)

i blush I look forward to sharing the excitment of this project in person with you some day, and by then it will indeed be "the good old days." Oh, so much to say, I don't know where to start... Wiki is a godsend for folks who get things done without out the structure of plans and processes and meetings, though I think it would work in such environments as well. I keep looking at wikis and thinking, "This is much more what the internet promised to be all along." On the personal side, I'm living again in a realm I love — publishing, and I'd forgotten just how much I love it. Pondering how to get back to it and since I'm not working and looking, I'm digging around in that. Maybe I can put that together with getting my butt back to Alaska, which still feel most like home. As far as "thank yous" go, thanks for being the big WWR spark, bringing us the music and allowing the community to grow. --Sparkit 16:34, 28 March 2006 (AKST)

House Concert Gallery Page

What happened to the photos I posted on the gallery page? What did I do wrong? Sol 20:04, 30 March 2006 (AKST)

When you reverted it was to a version that didn't include the images you added after my last edit. I fixed it.
I was only teasing when I said you said you'd program the auto-entry of those. Thank you for doing it, though. I'm going to see about accessing the FTP folder tommorrow and snag them all, or something. Thanks, again. --Sparkit 20:20, 30 March 2006 (AKST)
Oh, ok. Thanks for fixing it! I obviously have a lot to learn still. Hopefully, you won't have to run around cleaning up after me for too long, but this is quite the learning experience. Uploading the photos to the gallery was sort of practice, but it's a pain in the ass, since you have to download them, then upload them, then copy the URL, then post in the gallery. Ugh! Hopefully Jim will figure out a way to link the FTP/Digicam folder directly to the wiki pictures. That would make life a whole lot easier in the long run. ::oops Forgot to sign. -- Sol 20:28, 30 March 2006 (AKST)
You're learning fast, Sol. Not to worry about cleaning up after you. Usually, I'll tell folks how to fix things, rather than fix them, so they learn something. Last night, though the house concert gallery was timely and I was bleary-headed, so I went ahead and fixed it.
It occured to me this morning that it would have been more efficient to add the photos to a category (by entering the category tag in the upload summary) rather than build a gallery. (See Category:Diane Zeigler and Brooks Williams House Concert.) That would have cut out the copy/paste/save routine. Hopefully we can convince Jimbob to make a bot, train the EJs, or something for future house concerts.
Thanks again, Sparkit 05:21, 31 March 2006 (AKST)

I saw your note

Esther says thanks for the sweet words, Sparkit... I'm off to go cheer Jim up with some chicken soup, I hope! If you ever hurt yourself, I'll bring you chicken soup to cheer you up, too! Esther 20:05, 2 April 2006 (AKDT)

Tables

Since you seem to know a lot about tables :) Any idea why I suddenly have borders on my user page? I have it set to 0 and it used to work fine. Kelli 17:03, 3 April 2006 (AKDT)

Jimbob is playing with the CSS files that define how things look, and it looks like his border code is overriding our (mine, too!) border="0" markup. Sparkit 17:12, 3 April 2006 (AKDT)

Clutter

Dear Mr. Toad,

We are reconsidering your offer of additional clutter, since we have found an uncluttered corner at our location. Please advise as to the availability of the offered clutter.

Chat Problems

ReWoven is not able to post in the chat and hasn't been able to for the past several days. (See chat history for some discussion). I noticed she is using MS Internet Explorer 5.0 and Mac_PowerPC. I just thought I'd see if you have any ideas since you use Macs. Kelli 09:58, 4 April 2006 (AKDT)

I just confirmed that it's a bug with Explorer on Mac, and reported it on the Bug reports page. I recommend using Firefox. Explorer is dog slow on Mac with WWR. Firefox loads the WWR pages in 1/4 the time that Explorer does, in addition to other advantages. (Sparkit 10:55, 4 April 2006 (AKDT))

Darkling Reply

Darkling by Sparkit.I've been piddling with making this image into a greeting card for awhile. It's time to release it, just as a reminder of magic for you. Her name is "Darkling." (long story) (Sparkit 21:07, April 5, 2006 (AKDT))

How wonderful and sweet an image... someday I'd love to hear the story... it's been so long since I remembered fairies exist... now a third one pops up... Hmmmmm.... :-) Esther 21:33, April 5, 2006 (AKDT)

talk test

a talk test. I didn't get the beloved, "you've got messages" from earlier messages. I'm thinking the upgrade? (SparkitTest 06:34, April 6, 2006 (AKDT))

still works but message is obscure You have new messages (diff to penultimate revision). http://www.wholewheatradio.org/wiki/index.php?title=User_talk:Sparkit&diff=cur

"Category Artists"

OMG...do I need to put "Category:Artists" at the bottom of each of those artist pages I have done? Thanks for gettting the mice...I'll have to look and see if you got any others. I'll go back and fix the ones missed, and try to remember to do it in the future --Bisbonian 08:09, April 9, 2006 (AKDT)

I woundn't worry about it, because it's not working. The ones I tried didn't end up in the category (Category:Artists). (Another bug to write. ;) ) Though, adding the category would be fine, since at some time it may work.
The artist pages you are creating are wonderful! Many, many thanks! I've spotted a few to which I want to add comments. Like Arlo. I still have the vinyl I bought way back when! No turntable. (Sparkit 08:19, April 9, 2006 (AKDT))
Yeah, I've got a vinyl copy, too! Of several of his albums...last of the Brookly Cowboys, Amigo, maybe others. no turntable lol One of these days! I'm so glad you like the pages...it's something I have figured out how to do, so I will keep cranking them out --Bisbonian 08:26, April 9, 2006 (AKDT)

Out of my tightie whities, at last!!!!

Hey Sparkit! I figured out how to fix the skins problem! I uploaded Firefox, opened the WWR page and it let me change the skin! :-D I just couldn't get it to change on IE! I'm so happy, I could weep...God, I hated those knickers! (unsigned by User:Fine-line)

Yippe! Now the fun begins. Those tightie whities are OK only for short periods of time. For future reference, what version of Windows are you using and what version of IE (in IE there's usually something called "About" in the "Help" menu.). (Sparkit 11:31, April 17, 2006 (AKDT))

I have EI version 6.0.2900.2180xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 Update versions:; SP2;

...according to the little box...sorry about not signing before Fine-line

Thanks, Fine-line! What flavor of Windows?
No worries about the sig. I just add that so's I remember who left a message. (Sparkit 12:30, April 17, 2006 (AKDT))

I think I have Windows XP ...God I can't remember! Where do I find that info again? How embarrassing! Fine-line

Again, no worries. There's nothing to be embarresed about. I just happen to have done this sort of support thing for a living. Click and hold the start button. A window pops up and usually the Windows flavor is written there. Sometimes written sideways along the side. (Sparkit 12:48, April 17, 2006 (AKDT))

well, it wasn't there but I did find it under My Computer/ system information (duh!) Windows XP, Home Edition 2002, Service Pack 2 ...now I remember! HA HA Fine-line

Many, many thanks! My memory of where stuff is at in Windoze is hazy. bigblink (Sparkit 14:42, April 17, 2006 (AKDT))

Peace Train

Hey sparkit! Are you headed north up tp Talkeetna sometime this summer? When? Fine-line

Hiya, Fine-line! I've not plans to visit Talkeetna. Since hanging around WWR again, I've become quite homesick for Alaska again. Though I grew up by Puget Sound, Alaska feels more like home. Hence my comment in the chat that I want my next trip to Alaska to be for the long term. And I've been pondering a lot lately how to go about that, and my heart just aches for Alaska.
Are you going up? When are you thinking of going? (Sparkit 16:40, April 23, 2006 (AKDT))

It's starting to look like August/September for me...though I'm not sure I can wait that long to go on holiday! I sure hate being there when it's tourist season. I found Talkeetna to be Gawd Awful when we were there for Wheatstalk. When I was there in the fall of 2003 it was quite lovely. So, I guess to answer your questions: Yes I'm definately going up; and no, I'm not sure when. If they through out a concert, perhaps I'll go up earlier...I don't know what I'm doing! LOL Fine-line

Wheatberries

I was a little worried about my stash of wheatberries, so I am glad to see that they are safe. A couple of questions, though...have measures been taken to protect them from voles, and what is the current interest rate on wheatberries? --Bis 14:13 23 Apr 06 BLT

That's how the WWR marketing geeks want you feel. Safe and secure. The full press release says that the vault is vole-proof, but it says nothing about the interest rate. You might want to leave a message for the controller, Esther, to find out the answer to that. Let me know what you find out. (Sparkit 16:50, April 23, 2006 (AKDT))

Plum Freakin Nuts

"You are either quite brave or plumb freakin' nuts for sorting out the Esther Golton track."

The jury is still out on that one...but they recently requested a copy of the DSM-IV [1] --Bisbonian 15:38, April 24, 2006 (AKDT)

Thanks for the .pngs

Finally got around to the hugely gargantuan task of using the star .pngs you created and uploaded. Thanks! Based on how long that took me, it'll probably be 2-3 months before doing anything on the bar vs. star discussion. wink Jimbob 09:14, April 26, 2006 (AKDT)

Big Hug

I just saw your comment in the chat about a dear friend having cancer. My heart goes out to everyone involved. I can't find words powerful enough to let you know I'm giving you a big hug and lots of compassion right now. I don't know what else me, or you, or anyone can do. I'm so sorry. Love, Jim

Thanks, Jim. We'll miss her, but who knows, she may hang in for another 10 or 20 years. Though that's not what she wants. My upset and tears are about me. I'm over the shock now.
My thoughts are with you today as you do the doctor thing. (Sparkit 08:15, April 28, 2006 (AKDT))

Too Many Images

Glad you figured out that I somehow loaded duplicate images. I'm not sure why, but the first time around it changed the colons to dashes, and then I couldn't find them! So I uploaded them again. --Bisbonian 08:13, April 30, 2006 (AKDT)

Great gallery page! There's some characters Uploading just doesn't like. It's weird that they couldn't be found. That might be the system cache not being current. (Sparkit 09:22, April 30, 2006 (AKDT))

Featured

Can anyone update the "Featured" stuff? If so, update about every 24 hours? Kelli 06:14, May 4, 2006 (AKDT)

Hi Kelli! Anyone can change the featured stuff. Yeah, update no more often than 24 hours. The listings are in templates and those templates are placed inside other templates and on other pages so that changes only need to be made on one template page for each feature type. The templates to change are:
Other pages will automatically show the changes.
So, if you've got some features in mind, go for it! (Sparkit 06:47, May 4, 2006 (AKDT))
Thanks! I didn't really have anything in mind, but did it anyway. I just used the "Radom page" feature to pick links. Kelli 07:16, May 4, 2006 (AKDT)
Thank you Kelli! It's really nice when folks like you come in and update those Daily features. Sparkit and I won't be able to keep it up long-term so anytime we can enlist someone who is competent to change them when they need changing (kinda like a diaper), it really helps. thanks Jimbob 13:19, May 5, 2006 (AKDT)
Oh, and I just realized that if we put a good short comment in the Summary for each of those, then do a History (http://www.wholewheatradio.org/wiki/index.php?title=Template:Featured_listener&action=history) it will be easier to insure we don't get duplicate User Of The Day etc. Jimbob 13:21, May 5, 2006 (AKDT)
Yup. Writing a little something in the summary, then checking the page's history is a wonderful way to keep track of this sort of thing. I put a little something about doing just that on the talk pages for those templates. (Sparkit 15:31, May 5, 2006 (AKDT))

Music library problems

For your putzing pleasuremona, a new page to list Music library problems, or at least park all those "issues" in one place. (Sparkit 20:36, May 8, 2006 (AKDT))

Thank you. I've started several long entries on your talk page today but never hit Enter. Your idea is a good one. I think I'm behind the 8-ball (It is certain) and need to kick my butt into coding mode again. Just gotta finish these CDs. I'm going to respond on that page you created with some of the reasons behind some of the problems ... but I need to code fixes. Thanks Sparkit. Knowing you're there helping has helped me maintain my cool today. wink Jimbob 20:48, May 8, 2006 (AKDT)
Oh, tease me with unsent long entries! ::smile I've got one to write you on my chat page.
You explained it on The Mill, which I'd forgotten. Folks want to do something with the discrepencies they find, so now we have a page on which they can iterate them.
The coding will happen when you feel like it. It's a hobby, remember? Stuff works fine as it is. We can listen to the music we like, chat with our Wheatpals and create webpages until we're silly.
I know how challenging just a few complaints (they do wrench my gut for a few moments) can be, but one doesn't have to rise to meet every one of those challenges. That's putting out fires mode, rather than building a solid structure.
My 2 cents. (Sparkit 21:04, May 8, 2006 (AKDT))
Sparkit...I think you DID blow something up! Now Iz's original page does not populate correctly. While you were doing the template thing, I was working on the same page, and trying to make it say this:
==Biography==
See Songs:Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World. That song is credited to Israel Iz Kamakawiwo'Ole, but the system does not recognized that spelling, or correctly populate this page with his songs. All of his other songs are credited to Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole.
Okay, it's all changing too fast for me to keep up lol...I'll just let you work! --Bisbonian 15:49, May 9, 2006 (AKDT)
Check it out now, Bis, and see what you think. The template thing copies the everything but the "noinclude" stuff to the Iz page. (Sparkit 15:58, May 9, 2006 (AKDT))
I tried to explain it in your chat, but maybe I can do it better here. The new page, with "Iz" included, populates itself with the songs of whatever artist is playing now...just as if it was a mispelled artist name with no songs associated with it. I wouldn't even have tried to make the page, but the song "Over The Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" is credited to his name with the "Iz" included. (and its one of my favorite songs here...) It is as if somehow that song has been orphaned, with no valid artist. --Bisbonian 16:07, May 9, 2006 (AKDT)

Jim's Cabin

Since there are only two pages that link to Jimscabin, I just changed them both to Jim's cabin, do you want to get rid of the redirect? --Bisbonian 15:14, May 9, 2006 (AKDT)

It'll make less clutter. I'll delete it now that you've changed those links. Thanks!
Is that really Jimbo's cabin? I remember him talking about a tree falling on it, but I dropped out of the WWR scene for awhile after that. (Sparkit 15:21, May 9, 2006 (AKDT))
