Minor Menu Change Suggestion
The reason I asked so many questions was that I wanted to be sure of not stepping on any toes, being the newb here and all. Feeling somewhat reassured, however let me jump in and suggest a simple change: Take the link that says "Recently Played Music" and rename it "What Played Recently?". Then move the link to just below "What's Playing?" This way these two links would be together, which seems more logical to me. Let me know what you think, or just go ahead and make the change. BTW, Kelli, who else is helping you with documentation. I'd like to be sure they get notice of any significant ideas, too.Gearhead (talk/contribs) 09:47, September 19, 2008 (AKDT)
- Something like changing the left hand menu should discussed by the community and Jim. Please start a discussion and link to it from Discussion topics. Putting discussions there will eliminate the need to leave messages on various talk pages about documentation. (I don't know who all will be helping.) Discussion & Talk
The Discussion & Talk page appears to have been set up as a place where Wheatheads could enter into some of the pros and cons before making changes to the site. However, it appears there has not been a lot of participation in this process recently. Should we try to revive this process? Or should we try something else that gets folks interested again. Talk to me! Gearhead (talk/contribs) 14:39, September 18, 2008 (AKDT)
- I wish I knew the answer, Gearhead. It has been an ongoing struggle to get people interested/involved. I guess just lead by example.
There is an active topic right now (about the Daily Topic) so hopefully people will get involved. Kelli (talk/contribs) 05:21, September 19, 2008 (AKDT)
Am I doing this Right?
I've put MY post on YOUR Talk page. Is that how it is supposed to be done? I ask you a Q or give an opinion on YOUR page, and then you answer it on MY page? If that's not it, then please explain. Don't worry; I'm not going to pester you too much. I'll begin finding answers on my own soon. Gearhead (talk/contribs) 12:55, September 18, 2008 (AKDT)
- Yes. Anytime you want to leave a message for a particular user, use their talk page since they won't likely be monitoring yours. Sometimes we copy the message in both places when responding (like I've done here), but I'm guilty of not always doing that. In case you haven't seen it already, Category:How_to contains links with wiki tutorials. Kelli (talk/contribs) 13:03, September 18, 2008 (AKDT)
Is This the End?
When the statesmen from the thirteen original colonies, which were to become the United States of America, had compromised mightily, written a constitution, and fought a bitter war, to bring a new nation into being I’ll wager they thought they had created something new, special, and unique among the forms of governance upon the Earth. Indeed they had. But where is that ideal, that dream, today? Search near and far, high and low - it is not often you will find it.
The idea of a government existing to serve the citizenry, rather than the other way around, was predicated on having decisions affecting themselves and their neighbors be made by a well informed body of voters. In America, today there is no such group. Although many are legally eligible to vote, only a fairly small fraction of them have spent the time and expended the effort to become even moderately informed. When asked who their governor, or senator, or even who the President of the United States is, many cannot.
Voters today will bemoan the tragic state of our economy, health care, energy, world influence, education, immigration, and infrastructure. Actually, the list could go on at considerable length. They will then aver that we must put a moose shooter in Washington to bring about the needed reforms; and perhaps to safeguard our borders. The result, of course, will be that we will still have a government incapable of changing, but good at shooting moose.
America, WAKE UP! Those who claim you can have change and reform by electing the same party and people who created the current mess, are either crazy or stupid! Any candidate, who says he won’t increase taxes, but the other one will, is LYING to you. Do you like being lied to? Do you like being ripped off? If anyone wants to bring about real change, right now, all that it takes to begin is to stop lying; and if this election is decided in favor of the Republican candidate then America will stand in ruins. Will we let that happen? Gearhead (talk/contribs) 14:53, September 17, 2008 (AKDT)
The Short Timer
H'llo, Jim, Of late I've not had much time to spend at my favorite website, WWR. I'm hoping this is not the cause of people not responding to my ideas with interest, or even enthusiasm. I do really wish I had more time to do so, because each day that passes brings me closer to the day when cancer will reveal his final answer.
Thing is, the site seems to be headed away from its goals and objectives, rather than closer. Working together, can we make some changes for the sake of getting better until I go? Gearhead (talk/contribs) 09:33, September 13, 2008 (AKDT)
Welcome
COBOL!!!! Wow - I remember that. Was never very good at it. Fortran either. But I had a chance to use ALGOL a few times and loved it. But once I found Basic, it was all over. Never looked back. Oh wow - and JCL - yeah, Job Control Language as I remember it. Now that was fun! Anyway, good to see ya over here. And as you learn this wiki language, you'll no longer be able to call yourself a dinosaur. You'll be right on the cutting edge! Template:Emot ROTFL
Gearhead: JimBob has been planning to upgrade current WWR user interface for a few months. He's skipping over Version3 and using the WIKI to create Version4 of WWR. The WIKI is being created and features are still being added. Give the new chat room a try (click on the link to the left). The Wiki chat room will have similar features to the current chat....soon. The nice thing about this Wiki is that you can quickly create page on any topic you choose. You could create a page for your favorite band, music or whatever you think would interest the WWR community. There are a few tricks and tips that are being documented, so you may have to ask others for a little guidance in these early days. Have Fun and ask questions if you need help. - RickHap 19:52, 27 March 2006 (AKST)
Hey there gearhead, great to hear from you tonight. Just got in from work and couldn't wait to get to the wwr site and listen to some cool tunes and chat a bit. Yes, I think you are correct about longdog, he is near me, but I am closer to the mtns. I left him a short note, thanks for the introduction. Loraine is my given name, Lorrie is the nickname I have gone by my whole life, but I like either one. Well, heres wishes for a great evening for you and your wife, and hope to catch you in chat someday soon.

Hi Gearhead! Anagram created a page about wheathead interests, called Flying. I listed you on there, since I knew you had done it for a while...but really didn't have much to say. Please feel free to add to it...pictures if you have any...or delete your name from it if you would rather.By the way, I also had skills in COBOL, Fortran, JCL...and before that TRS-80 BASIC! Wiki is more fun! I once made up a carboard sign that said "I will fly for food". It worked
Hey, Gearhead...I look forward to seeing the pictures. :) Sometimes I think I go overboard here with the flying stuff...so I wasn't sure if anyone else wanted to chime in.
The 737 picture was something I shamelessly stole from somewhere (its all over the net...I think there is a little website logo on it somewhere.) It is a 737-200, which I used to drive, but belonging to a different airline (modernized gauges for a -200 compared to what we had.) We retired all our -200s last year, I kinda miss them. The kid is the spitting image of my nephew...and my brother is a computer graphics geek. Hmmmm
Help!
I can never seem to find that page that was set up to request changes and enhancements to the site. Figured you'd be the one who could tell me. Next time I get there I'll bookmark it!! Gearhead 20:32, July 22, 2006 (AKDT)
- Hi Gearhead! That would be Feature requests. Easier to remember is Requests which has a link to it. Thanks! (Sparkit 20:39, July 22, 2006 (AKDT))
How to help
Thanks for the note. Contributing_to_this_site is a good place to start. Or ask in the chat. Hope that helps and thanks for your help! Jimbob 17:40, February 14, 2008 (AKST)

Hi Gearhead, Beautiful picture on your website. Firewalk (talk/contribs) 12:46, September 9, 2008 (AKDT)
- Firewalk! I am sincerely honored that you find pleasure in my photo. Bringing/giving pleasure and joy to others is what I have been after for most of my life. At times I've not been very good at it, so it is rather ironic that, now that I have cancer, a whole lot of folks are letting me know what I've meant to them. It certainly feels good, though; being affirmed in this way. Gearhead (talk/contribs) 16:34, September 9, 2008 (AKDT)
Suggestions
Thanks for the suggestions on my talk page. I will certainly keep them in mind when/if I do work on the site. Jim is still the only one that can rip CDs and do any programming changes. I believe he is going to work on documentation after Wheatstalk and I'm sure some of us will help with that. We know it is an issue.
WWR uses MediaWiki software so I'm not sure much can be done about the layout and navigation. Many people use Wikipedia so there are large numbers of people that can learn how to use it.
I agree we need both artists and listeners. However no one is required to use the wiki, so it shouldn't deter people from listening.
Thanks again for your suggestions! Kelli (talk/contribs) 10:29, September 13, 2008 (AKDT)
- Sorry you felt "talked down to". That wasn't my intention and I'm not the best at communicating. I was simply trying to answer your message to me. Kelli (talk/contribs) 16:23, September 13, 2008 (AKDT)
- Kelli, as I said, written communications alone are easy to misinterpret. That's why I have learned, always, to give the benefit of the doubt and to clarify if unsure.
- Listening to the music is great, and I do, every chance I get. But I also want to help the site in other ways and be a real part of the WWE community, not just a lurker. True, I don't know a lot about Wikki, but I am learning, little by little. Also, I have 17 years experience in application programming, a lot of which was spent in designing user interfaces, so I think I really do have something I could contribute. I have a number of specific suggestions already. but I want to feel they will get serious consideration before I take the time to go into too much detail.
- Hi Gearhead. I'm so sorry about your cancer and I wish you the best. Of course your suggestions are welcome and feel free to start a new page to discuss this type of thing. (Please just keep in mind that we are all volunteers here, Jim is the only programmer and is cutting back on his involvement, and we are limited to the MediaWiki software.) You can always create a "sandbox" type page to compose your thoughts and then ask others for feedback. It would be something like User:Gearhead/sandbox. Also, you can jump right in and start improving help or other things you have in mind.
The Million Closets Project
Hi Gearhead, I am actively collecting instruments. Most of the focus is still on the Gulf Coast, but I am broadening the scope of of where they go. I have had requests from other communities with relocated evacuees. Thank you for your interestFirewalk (talk/contribs) 15:26, September 14, 2008 (AKDT)
