A bit about me

I was born and raised in Saratoga Springs, NY where I worked for a while as an apprentice aircraft mechanic. Once I realized I wasn't going anywhere with that job I joined the US Air Force. I lived in Idaho for 11 years, then in Iceland for a year, followed by 6 years in Alaska and most reciently Oklahoma.

The Alaska Years: I lived in the town of North Pole. While not my favorite part of Alaska, Fairbanks and the White Mountains offer a few things to do that you will not find elsewhere, and the summers are beautiful. The most memorable period of my stay in Fairbanks was sharing a hospital room for eight days with musher and mountain man Charlie Boulding in late June of 2002. Talking with Charlie and his wife Robin gave me a glimpse into the Alaska I aspire to live in.

I traveled Alaska by road from Homer to Prudhoe Bay and flew into Juneau for a long New Years weekend that was all too short and way too much fun (HeHe). I suppose my favorite travels were weekends fishing and camping around Talkeetna, hiking the flower filled meadows of Hatchers Pass, hiking and fishing the Kenai Peninsula, or just goofing off in Girdwood or Homer. All of these activities were filled with fantastic people and excellent music.

So what brought me to Oklahoma?

Well, I am presently active duty in the USAF. I first enlisted in 1984 and my training is in ground radar. I am presently assigned to National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) Radar Operations Center (ROC) located in Norman, OK on the Oklahoma University's North Research Campus (aka Westheimer Airport). The ROC is a DOC, DOT and DOD joint venture that manages the entire NEXRAD (NEXt generation weather RADar) WSR-88D radar network. The ROC provides "cradle-to-grave" support of documentation, sustainment, upgrade, maintenance aa well as R&D for the next "next generation" of weather radar.

It has been interesting work; I have had to learn UNIX, LINUX, Cisco Networking and a number of other disciplines that are normally outside of my specialty. My job has me pulling shifts on a 24/7 telephone call center where site technicians and meteorologists can call for assistance. If the problem can not be solved via phone, we travel to the site to provide support, sometimes on very short notice. All in all it's a fantastic job, because I learn something new every day; there's always something different happening.

Presently, I just turned 42, and live in the outskirts of SW Oklahoma City. The best thing I can say about this place is that the cost of living is very reasonable and the motorcycle season is nearly year round. This is a good thing as I have developed a pretty good case of Plantar Fasciitis and my feet can no longer support prolonged hikes. I am currently looking for a new job, as I am scheduled to retire later this year. Hopefully I will find something that lets me live somewhere with four seasons, mountains and less traffic.

Today's horoscope for Gemini:
Take each hour as it comes today -- let the day unfold as it wants to, and try not to push things in any one direction. Resist the urge to fill up your free time with errands, socializing or shopping trips. Being busy just to be busy is no way to exist right now. It might feel a little weird to have no plans for the day, but this experience will be good for you. If today is already booked, make a note to leave a free day in the near future. It's time for you to let the world happen.
Looks like a 4 wheatberry day for you dear Gemini.
