Hi. I'm Balertwine. I live under the bridge. And I'm quite happy.
I been here ever since my woman put me outta the house five years ago with nuthin' but the shirt on my back. Which was kinda rough, 'cause I wandered 'round without any pants on for three days.
Now, I'm the king of my own world, and I git by just fine with my Coleman cooler, my Sterno cooker, and my Thermos.
OK, OK, you're thinkin', how do I tune in to Whole Wheat Radio? Well, looky. I got me a CD-radio outta the dashboard of a Mercedes Benz that some fool left unlocked, and I got it hooked up to a car battry with jumper cables. One night, when the bottle of Thunderbird was darn near empty, I was dancin' 'round in the moonlight and singin' an old Woody song. I grabbed ahold of a beam of the bridge to steady myself, and reached down to tune the radio, and I was kinda wet from the dew, you know? Well, I turned that dial, next thing you know, I was feelin' all tingly, and I thought at first it was 'cause I was thinkin' 'bout my old gal Sally, but no, that warn't it. Then I thought it was the car battry, and I was electrocutin' myself, and that coulda been. All I know fer sure is that Whole Wheat Radio started comin' in clear as a bell. So here I am, tuned in.
Only problem is, I ain't figgered out a way to keep Whole Wheat radio tuned in unless I grab ahold of the bridge and the radio at the same time. And you know, when that bottle of Thunderbird gits empty, you just cain't keep from dancin' to the tunes on Whole Wheat radio. I think you know what I'm talkin' 'bout. So I look kinda funny, one hand grabbin' the bridge beam, the other grabbin' the radio, and me in between, tryin' to boogy to the music without lookin' too schizophrenic. Darned near landed me in jail one night. Police officer had his cuffs out, ready to haul me off to the Emergency Psych Ward, so I let go of the radio and the bridge, and went spread eagle, and Fox News came on the radio. That was enough for him. He pleaded with me to grab ahold of the bridge and radio again, and even went out and bought me bottle of Thunderbird. Bless his heart.
So there you go. A brief autobiography of Baler Twine, Under the Bridge. That's all I remember. I think I was a kid once. The rest is kinda blurry.
Oh yeah, and I shook Jimmy Carter's hand one time. A fine man.
I gotta git goin' now. See a friend up at City Liquor, I hope.
