Kids: Kids who are quiet during the show and don't intrude on other audience members' acoustic reverie are welcome. Tom casts a magical quiet spell which can be completely ruined for other audience members if a kid starts making noise. If your child gets restless, please take them downstairs to the play area. Our environment is very relaxed so artists often open up and discuss mature topics or use conversational profanity. We leave it up to parents to determine beforehand (by visiting an artist's site) if a show is appropriate for their family.

Contact: Jim Kloss at 733-2452

Just click on the Listen (lo-fi) or Listen (med-fi) or Listen (hi-fi) links on the left-hand menu. In addition, if you can't make the concert, they are recorded and if the artist is happy and gives permission, the complete recording will be posted on this page within a few days of the show.

Biography

“It’s the words that tell the story.” That is Tom Begich. The bohemian son of a family steeped in Alaska politics and the product of a life of music, Tom’s music resonates with stories and the conflicts of the human condition.

Part of the Alaska music scene in the early 1980’s, Tom dropped out and tuned in to the world of politics and business for a decade before finding his way back to local coffee shops, street corners, and music festivals. Since returning to performing and recording, Tom has opened for recording artists Kelly Joe Phelps, Ann McCue, Santa Cruz River Band, Tim Mason, Stephen Fearing, Don Morrell, Paul Geremia, Randall Williams, Terry Holder, and Kim Richey. Tom also hosted a monthly Songwriter’s Showcase in his hometown of Anchorage for three years and has performed live on numerous radio stations and on the nationally syndicated radio show “West Coast Live".

Tom has released four CDs, "Such a World" in 1997, "Hotel Metropol" in 1999, and “Albuquerque Road” in 2001. His latest CD, “Cool Blue Light”, was released November 20, 2004 and garnered great reviews. He is presently at work on his fifth CD.

Tom continues to play in Alaska and small venues throughout the country. Citing musicians as different as Taj Mahal, Harry Chapin, and Christopher Parkening as influences, Tom combines an easy picking style with blues rhythms and storytelling skill to create a musical montage that is always interesting to the ear. His music includes a wide-variety of music ranging from acoustic instrumentals to blues and folk rock. A musician with a wholly original sound, Tom Begich will keep you humming for more long after he’s done.

A very interesting and candid ADN article about Tom's political family begins ... "Until I was nearly 12, I grew up with a man who was a legend, the son of Croatian immigrants, but who disappeared Oct. 16, 1972, into the clouds. No trace of him was ever found. My father, U.S. congressman Nick Begich, was critical in the 1971 passage of Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act." (More....)

Quotes About Tom Begich

Folks around town pretty much pigeonhole Tom Begich as the mayor's older brother. But the rest of the world -- from Sitka to Montana, Vermont and beyond -- knows him as a talented singer- songwriter. - Anchorage Daily News

Leave the glaring limelight for others; Tom Begich prefers a more subtle hue. And the singer-songwriter explores that idea on his latest disc, "Cool Blue Light." - AK This Month

Begich is an authentic troubadour, crisscrossing the country, playing at small venues and house concerts, and obviously gathering on a first hand basis much of the material that makes its way into his songs. - Folkworks
