| Location: Palmer Case Number: #06-80354, #06-80918, #06-81603 Type: Superior Court Verdict Returned / Attempted Murder of a State Trooper Text: On Wednesday afternoon on 7/30/08 a Palmer Superior Court jury that had been hearing testimony for nearly two weeks into the charges against Donald B. Voorhis, stemming from his actions during September 2006 near his Rampart Road trailer home, returned their verdict. Voorhis was found guilty of 1 count of Attempted Murder for firing his rifle at an Alaska State Trooper, who had entered the trailer to arrest Voorhis on 9/10/06. Voorhis was also found guilty of 7 counts of Assault in the 3rd degree for having pointed a rifle and/or fired at three civilians and at various State Troopers between 9/6/06 and 9/10/06. Additionally Voorhis was found guilty of 1 count of Violating Conditions of his Court Release, 1 count of Reckless Endangerment and 1 count of Resisting Arrest. The jury acquitted Voorhis of 2 counts of Attempted Murder but determined his conduct did constitute the offenses of Assault in the 3rd degree against the victims. On 7/31/08, in a separate hearing, in front of the same jury, it was determined that four of the counts involved aggravated conduct, thus allowing the sentencing judge the ability of handing down a more severe sentence. Sentencing is expected to occur in Palmer Superior Court on 11/3/08 at 9:45 a.m.. Prior Press Release from September 10, 2006: Location: Talkeetna Case number: 06-80918 Type: Barricaded Gunman / Exchange of Gunfire / Warrant Arrest Text: On 9/8/06 at about 1235 hours an Alaska State Trooper from Talkeetna attempted to effect the arrest of Donald B. Voorhis, age 49 at his trailer home on Rampart Road near Mile 7.5 of the Talkeetna Spur.=A0Voorhis was being sought for three misdemeanor arrest warrants which had been issued by the Palmer Court on 8/25/06 and was also wanted in connection with an assault investigation which began on 9/6/06 when Voorhis was alleged to have stood on Rampart Road, stopping a neighbor who was driving by, pointed a rifle at the neighbor and then firing a round from the rifle while standing next to the vehicle.=A0 The neighbor, Johnny R. Yow, age 48, was not injured, but immediately left the scene and reported the incident to Alaska State Troopers.=A0 When Troopers responded to Voorhis' residence on 9/6/06, Voorhis fled into the nearby woods. On 9/8/06 when the investigating State Trooper again arrived at the Voorhis residence, Voorhis was in possession of a rifle and stuck the rifle out the door of his trailer, pointed in the direction of the State Trooper and refused to come out of the residence. State Troopers from Talkeetna Post and Palmer Post responded to the area and made efforts to talk Voorhis into surrendering.=A0When it appeared that Voorhis would not exit the trailer home, members of the South Central Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) responded along with a State Trooper crisis negotiator based in Palmer and two State Trooper negotiators from Anchorage. Helo 3 was utilized to transport personnel from Anchorage to the scene and an investigator from Alaska Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Enforcement and his trained K-9 also responded to the scene. Mat-Su Borough Emergency Medical Personnel were requested to stage their personnel and equipment in the immediate area should they be needed for any injuries which may occur. Throughout the night Alaska State Trooper negotiators attempted to converse with Voorhis and even two of Voorhis' immediate family members arrived at the scene and attempted to communicate with Voorhis. On the morning of 9/9/06 a Palmer Court Judge issued a search warrant for entry into the Voorhis home on Rampart Road as State Troopers continued their surveillance of the trailer home.=A0A mental health professional from Anchorage was contacted and agreed to respond to the scene.=A0The physician also attempted to communicate with Voorhis but was unsuccessful. After the standoff had been underway for approximately 27 hours State Troopers began introducing chemical irritants into the trailer home in an effort to force Voorhis from the residence.=A0Although these efforts continued for nearly 6 hours Voorhis remained steadfast inside his home. State Troopers then settled in for a second long night maintaining surveillance on the residence as rain began to fall. On the morning of 9/10/06 the South Central Special Emergency Reaction Team was supplemented with personnel from the other two Alaska State Trooper Special Emergency Reaction Teams. The Northern SERT based in Fairbanks, sent four members and the Soutern SERT based in Soldotna, sent two members who arrived in Talkeetna approximately 0800 hours to relieve some of the more exhausted members of South Central SERT. Again on 9/10/06 State Trooper negotiators informed Voorhis of the court issued search warrant to enter his residence as well as the arrest warrants in existence for his arrest and requested he come out of his residence. When Voorhis did not come out further efforts at introducing chemical irritants into the trailer home began. At approximately 1500 hours it appeared Voorhis may be willing to exit the residence and was near the front door of the trailer.=A0SERT members at the doorway attempted to apprehend Voorhis but he fired upon State Troopers.=A0 Two State Troopers from South Central SERT returned fire and backed away from the residence. None of the shots struck the State Troopers or Voorhis.
