Talkeetna flood - August 2006
From WWR
A page for updates related to the Great East Talkeetna Flood Of August, 2006. Note that the East Talkeetna mentioned in most reports is not exactly where Whole Wheat Radio is located so there's no need to send dry clothing at this point.
Reports
Monday, 2PM - Telephone service has been restored so we're back on the air. The sun is shining. It's over. We return you now to your regularly scheduled lives...
Sunday, 11AM - It's still raining. I haven't been around town to see what's up. Things appear to be quiet and most of the websites so active in the last 2 days haven't been updated. We are just sitting tight hoping the rain stops so that the rivers can continue receding.
Saturday, 2:00PM - I (Jimbob) drove around East Talkeetna (not the River subdivision or anywhere out Beaver Rd. which definitely is flooded big time ) and volunteers doing sandbagging really seemed to have diverted the water that was running down Gliska St. and Easy St. (Photos here) Although I'm no official source, it appeared to these eyeballs that the worst was past and the volunteers had the water coming into East Talkeetna under control. That can change in an instant though if more rain comes or it's raining hard upstream. Other areas are definitely flooded and under significant water (we've heard reliable reports of 4+ feet of water in the River subdivision and Mercedes subdivision down Beaver Rd.) but for now, the portion of East Talkeetna we live in is still relatively dry.
Saturday, 11:31AM - Beaver Road is flooded badly. We are just now starting to see water start to come across Beaver Road into low-lying areas of East Talkeetna (the 'town' East Talkeetna). I would not say we are in danger, but there is a good possibility we're going to see water come up to the Wheat Hole. We're keeping an eye on it and moving some stuff that sits directly on the ground (propane, gas tanks, etc.)
Saturday, 4:01AM - Parks Highway: from Milepost 120 to Milepost 138 - road closed to traffic due to a major flood — for two days - last updated today at 3:04 AM
Saturday, 2:32AM - According to reports on the web, the Parks Highway is closed from Milepost 135 to Milepost 138 - road closed to traffic due to a major flood — for two days. At this point, no information about whether there is a way around this closure.
Saturday, 1:30AM - (from the chat) "Flood" update - I (Jimbob) drove to downtown Talkeetna and out Beaver Rd. Downtown looks normal. About 5 cars/trucks on Beaver road were parked (several dogsled trucks with dogs in them) apparently leaving their houses before/if roads get impassable. There were more cars driving around the area than normal for this time of night. I didn't get a look at any rivers themselves. I suspect it will all blow over in the next 24 hours without any/much property damage in this area. Rain has let up somewhat - no longer a hard rain, just a normal light rain. Over-and-out.
We ain't no news organization, but I promise you that if things get dicey, we'll be on the scene, reporting whatever we see. If we ain't here that means it ain't that bad here in East Talkeetna.
