Talk:Main Page
From WWR
Removed Recent Additions template but have no problem if someone puts it back and can make it look nice. Thought maybe it was best to keep down the number of clickable things on the main page so as not to overwhelm as per discussions over at the mill. Jimbob 19:23, 19 March 2006 (AKST)

Thank you
Oh, you're good Sparkit. You are really good. I like the new design and clarification and where you're going with help categories etc. This is sooooo cooooool!
New Main Page
Today I replaced the main page with the new design. Should the page be protected? I think that's the only way to get rid of the Edit links within that table. --J-Walk 09:03, 21 March 2006 (AKST)
- Man, this looks nice. I went ahead and protected it, since HMFIC mentioned it before. Sparkit 09:04, 21 March 2006 (AKST)
Message to Sparkit about Main Page reversion
Sorry, it was just easiest to revert to the last working version under IE where the main content was in the right place. I realize this wiped out a few of the changes you made. Rather than me trying to figure out what they were, I leave it to you to fix the 'small type on sidebar' stuff you did. Obviously, if you need to revert etc. feel free. I'm going to be in-and-out today with the doc's appointment, but if you want to make incremental changes, I'll be looking at the main page whenever I can to make sure it's okay under my IE browser. Sorry again as I know you did a lot of tedious correction of table tags. Jimbob 13:26, April 28, 2006 (AKDT)
- I'm afraid that even the reverted main page still has a problem in IE. Try viewing it when the browser window isn't maximized. The content gets pushed down below the right sidebar. Man IE sucks. --J-Walk 13:46, April 28, 2006 (AKDT)
- I fixed it. I removed the width="85%" parameter from the TABLE tag. --J-Walk 13:49, April 28, 2006 (AKDT)
- Thanks, J-Walk. The td and tr tags are back to unbalanced, but I find those very easily with BBedit.
- No worries about the revision, Jimbob. Like I just said, BBedit finds them very easily with its syntax checker.
- Another resolution may be to nest the whole page inside another table so's things don't move around. I'm working on that and some other ideas at User:Sparkit/Sandbox2. The present layout messes up how we've been doing system status, though, because that box won't work well in the main chat.
- And again, no apology necessary. It'd been smarter to do it in a sandbox first -- incrementally.(Sparkit 14:54, April 28, 2006 (AKDT))
Changes
The new "layout of the day" (
) changed these things
- nested tables so that the body and info columns stay in relative positions
- Template for Featured listener - making this and the item below into templates makes it easier to include the feature in other templates and pages. (See Template:Featured horizontal and Template:Featured vertical.)
- Template for Featured links
- Systemstatus is now a cell at the top of the right info box column. If there is no content in Template:Systemstatus the cell does not display. As soon as content is put in Systemstatus it is displayed.
- Killed "New and notable" which we weren't maintaining. The "Featured links" thing oughta cover it.
- Smaller wheatberries and type on those subheaders.
- horizontal bars deleted since they seemed to overlap the right column in so many browsers
