LAND OF SMILES (3:54) ©Carol Bean This is a story of some things I did before I was seventeen Let me tell u bout the life I lived before I was the high school queen. I was born in the middle of England; I was a girl in Ontario We moved to L.A. Hollywood, just north of Mexico. I was hiding, playing my guitar, keeping a low profile I was walking the beaches, by myself, alone in The Land of Smiles We used to listen to Zappa, the Dead, and the Air o plane Buffalo Springfield, Janis Joplin, she was stoned out of her brain I went looking for bluesmen playing downtown Lightnin’ Hopkins, Taj Mahal, Ry Cooder, and Gate Mouth Brown. I was playing my guitar, hanging around, at the edge of the scene I was learning to listen, still in high school, stuck in a time machine. How do y know which way t go when the church said ‘life’s a sin’ How do y ‘no which road to take when you grow up so innocent? In this land of smiles & beautiful people lookin for a moment of fame I was young & shy had my own style I wasn’t playing their game. I was playing guitar with my friends and listening to the radio I was driving the freeways, singing the blues, looking for- I don’t know. Now I’m still playing my guitar down at the end of the world I’m telling my story, singing this song just for my three girls. Oh don’t you hide, don’t be shy, get out there and do your thing, Live your life, keep it light, let me hear you sing.
