History
in 1955, a woman started a little revolution by refusing to give up her seat to a white man. Seven years later, a man got up in front of a lot of people to tell them about his vision of equality, but he got shot. There were riots. Then in 1992 while I was in Europe, a guy got beaten by cops and the cops got let off. There were more riots, but he went on TV and asked people to stop rioting.
(same story: see David's Roth's "That kind of Grace" or Richard Holler's "Abraham, Martin, and John")
This year there's a man running for president that I think has good ideas about how the country should be run. Nobody gets to talk about the fact that he's black, and that when he was born there were still separate bathrooms for black people.
I was toying around with one of the lines, and once I realized that "Liberty" and "Justice" made good backbones to the verses, and that I could tell this story in human terms, the song wrote itself.
That afternoon I went to hang with my buddy David Wilcox before he flew off to New Zealand for three weeks. He had helped me with another song that I was supposed to play for him, but I didn't get very far. So I played him this one, and he tweaked pretty hard - added some better words that were more open and inclusive, changed melody in one spot, and generally added a nice flavor. It was my first co-write of a "keeper" song.
Today (Jan. 24th 08) I played the song on KNBA in Anchorage and Danny Preston said it sounded like David's influence. I told him we wrote it together.
Good ears, Danny.

"Liberty" is the courage - on a bus in '55
for a strong, strong woman to say she's tired.
"Liberty" is the strength to stand right in harm's way, declaring: "I have a dream that there will come a day…"
Our country needs us now - needs a reason to stand tall: "Liberty" must be for all.
"Justice" is the vision asking "can we live in peace?"
from a man who's just been beaten by the police.
"Justice" is the winner when all our votes are cast and there's a black man in the White House at last.
Our country needs us now - needs a reason to stand tall: "…with liberty and justice for all."
