This song was written and recorded by Sam Cooke. He wrote an early draft of the song in May 1963, following a meeting with Civil Rights demonstrators in Durham, North Carolina. The song was recorded on December 21st in Los Angeles while working on his 1964 album Ain't That Good News. The song was released as a single late in 1964 as a b-side to Shake. For four decades following this release, disputes between Cooke's publisher and record company kept this recoring unavailable. In 2003 this dispute was settled. Since Cooke's death on December 11, 1964 this song has become an anthem for the American Civil Rights Movement, and has great acclaim; making various publications Greatest Songs lists and in March of 2007 was selected by the Library of Congress to be in the National Recording Registry.
