Radoslav Lorkovic Biography

Drawing from a multitude of influences ranging from elegant classical and jazz styles to the rawest, most basic blues, country and soul, Radoslav Lorkovic has taken on an unusually broad musical spectrum and refined it into his distinctive piano stlye. His tenure on the R&B and folk circuits has culminated in five critically acclaimed solo recordings and numerous appearances on the recordings of and performances with artists including Odetta, Jimmy LaFave, Ribbon of Highway Woody Guthrie Tribute, Greg Brown, Richard Shindell, Ellis Paul, Dave Moore, Andy White and Bo Ramsey. His twenty year touring career has led him from the taverns of the upper Mississippi River to the castles of Italy, The Canary Islands, The Yup'ik villages of Alaska and Carnegie Hall.

Born in Zagreb, Croatia in 1958, Lorkovic's initial exposure to music can be attributed to two grandmothers. Antonija Bujas, his maternal Grandmother, sang him Croatian, Slovenian and Czech folk songs since birth. At age one he was reported to be singing back on pitch. By age three he was putting on floor shows for his grandfather and friends who would respond by showering him with coins yelling "pivaj Radoslav pivaj!" During this time classical music played in the home constantly due to the influence of his paternal grandmother Melita Lorkovic, a internationally renown classical pianist. After this blend of central European musical influences Radoslav moved to the United States at age six. He had a foothold on a classical music career when at age fourteen he was sidetracked by a blues scale that a friend had taught him.

After several years and countless hours of expounding on this spark, Lorkovic began touring at age 20 with Bo Ramsey and the Sliders. Lorkovic entered the band having mastered the styles of boogie-woogie greats such as Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, Freddie Slack etc.. Ramsey's influence drove Lorkovic deeper to the core of the blues. The music of Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and Little Walter shifted Lorkovic's focus to the basics as he began to draw from the styles of Otis Spann and Pinetop Perkins. Several years later Lorkovic and Ramsey joined forces with Greg Brown adding musical authenticity to his deep Iowa Roots. At this time Lorkovic was simultaneously brushing up on his classical heritage and looking south to the polyrhythmic sounds of Professor Longhair and James Booker. He had picked up Tex-Mex and Zydeco accordion as well. In 1990 he made his solo recording debut. Six CDs later, Lorkovic currently tours the world regularly appearing at prestigious events such as the Woody Guthrie Festival, Womad, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Mountain Stage, Prairie Home Companion as well as a litany of Italian castles and villas.

Andy White Biography

Andy White, one of the great Irish singer-songwriters, tours the world with his 12 string guitar in one hand and a book of poetry in the other. He has worked with the likes of Peter Gabriel and Tim Finn, been the A of ALT and won Ireland's top songwriting award.

They called him Belfast’s Bob Dylan as he emerged in the new wave of acoustic music headed by The Pogues. Melody Maker reviewed his first album with the headline ‘Yer Man’s Brilliant!’ and Folk Roots made him their youngest cover star.

Andy has worked with the great names of Irish music – supporting Van Morrison on the ‘No Guru’ tour of the UK and Ireland, and Mary Black in the US. Sinead O’Connor and The Frames have guested on his recordings, Andy was included in the Irish HQ Rock Hall of Fame in 1998.

Socially aware in a way which comes naturally to someone who grew up in Belfast during the 70s and 80s, Andy’s work has always reflected his time and place. In trying to make this particular experience universal, his writing incorporates and transcends the boundaries of his native land.

Marian Call
Vanilla (2007)

$15

Marian has the voice of an angel: pure, clear, strong, and capable of wiping out a city. Talent, great song-writing ability, and a sense of humor: Marian Call is the anti-Britney.

There’s a strong Firefly feel here. “Dark Dark Eyes” is about River, the stray “gorram” pops up, and these songs have a goal we identify with: there’s a strong female character here. A lot of them, really. There’s the one who’s afraid she doesn’t love enough, and the one that surrenders her heart completely. There’s the one who rather wistfully wishes she was sexy and the one who delivers a verbal smackdown to a phony. My favorite songs are “Vanilla (I’m Not Sexy)” which describes my wife’s self-image perfectly, and “Flying Feels Like” which should be riding the Top 40 if Billboard had any taste left. And you will be unable to not sing along with her cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Chelsea Morning.” Just give in, you’ll get a headache trying to hold out. -- C.A. Bridges

Marian Call
Not Available Anywhere But Here Homeburn! (2008)

$7.00

Song of the Month CD's burned to order: This sounds like a good idea to me, actually. I will just design a label for them and bring up some labels already printed -- they'll still be an obviously home-baked job, but that's just fine with me. They'll just be MP3's, not AIFF -- and they're not all mixed and mastered perfectly, but I expect that at a dollar a track, they'd be worth the price anyhow. I'll bring up the CD's and slim jewel cases.

1. I Wish I Were a Real Alaskan Girl
2. Ti Guardero Nel Cuore (More)
3. Whistle While You Wait
4. Vera Flew the Coop
5. We're Out for Blood (the theme song to "Zombie Cheerleading Camp"
6. So Far Away
7. It was Good for You, Too

You can view your cart but it will only contain CD purchases and not any Tip Jar donations - those are processed as standalone transactions and do not get put in your cart.

Donations

Throw some cash into Marian's tip jar. Musicians are blown away by the generosity of WWR listeners who generously support them via the tip jar. Throwing $5-10 or more in this jar does more to encourage musicians and spread the good word about WWR house concerts than you can imagine. thanks
