A Phonegram (also referred to as Wheatgram by those who can't remember which is which or simply refuse to let "The Good Old Days" die) is a message that is aired on the webcast in your own voice. You call (907)733-2934 (an Alaskan number that you have to pay any toll charges to call) using a standard telephone. An answering machine picks up the telephone and gives a short recorded message. You leave your message after the beep and then hang up.

After you hang up, the main WWR computer picks up the recorded message and inserts it into the audio stream. It will play after the current song is done. If you are tuned into the webcast you will hear your message, in your own voice, shortly after leaving it.

What makes a good Phonegram

Anything that is amusing or personal. Poetry. Your thoughts about a subject. A funny voice. A theatrical character that calls on a regular basis. Anything you think you'd like to hear aired between songs. If you're a musician, tell us about where you're playing next or tell us a funny road story or just give us a warm fuzzy that you care about us.

"I just called to say I love you."

What makes an annoying Phonegram

Gross profanity. Overdone sexual innuendos or violence. Serious threats. If you're a musician, overly promoting yourself or your website or your latest CD. Remember ... if you mix in a story or promote yourself with a little humor or a musical ditty, people enjoy it. A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down. But if you cram your promo down listeners' throats like the hyped-up music "biz" books on promotion tell you to, Whole Wheat Radio listeners will tune you out.

Hey - I'm a SuperTech and don't use phones

Oh, then you can use this I suppose. It won't go out over the air, but it will automatically get published in the Wheatly Reader community blog where people will hear it. We have nothing to do with this mail system - and can't vouch for anything having to do with it.
