New neighbors

Here is a list of new online neighbors and collaborators who've signed up in the last week. One of the things that is most helpful is welcoming them into the community. Clicking on the "Talk" page link and leaving a message helps get over the initial "size shock" of this site. Maybe you can offer to help them write their user page? Or explain how to upload photos? Whatever you do is appreciated and serves as the glue between all of us.

For whatever it's worth, I am now officially off probation at FDLE. I made it through the probationary year, my superiors are extremely pleased with my work and everyone has been supportive and nice. Although my work is not exciting and not very interesting (data entry usually isn't either) it's steady and once the economy improves, I probably can move into other areas.

Also, an update on the gastric bypass surgery from March 2, 2006:

I have officially lost over 200 pounds and have lost 24 inches (that is two FREAKIN' FEET!) from my waistline. I now can buy clothes "off the rack" in just about any store selling men's clothes. This is something I haven't been able to do in more than two decades. It's all still hard to wrap my head around. I look at myself in the mirror and still see that old 425+ pound guy (I know I weight more than that but the scale at my family physician [at that time] only went up to 425 and I was pegging it out). I try to take a power walk around the block which is a mile as many times during the week and am trying to lose about 15 more pounds. Those are proving hard to lose.

Anyway, I realise that it's not polite to blow one's own horn but....

TOOT-TOOT!

  • An excellent report and I'd be tooting too if it was me. Scobey (talk/contribs) 11:05, September 6, 2008 (AKDT)
  • Good for you! Best of luck with those last 15 pounds! Denali (talk/contribs) 14:22, September 6, 2008 (AKDT)

Hello wheatheads, I have just returned home after 10 weeks working at Camp Parsons, a Boy Scout camp on the Hood Canal in Washington. I ran the rifle range and shot over 100,000 rounds of 22 cal ammo downrange in 8 weeks. 3500 boys came to camp this summer and I believe all of them came up to the range and shot riles. I hope you all had as great of summer as I did! Reed

Life is good, and we got the new hybrid HVAC system installed. Chez Zben now has a Oil fired hot water radiator system plus a 3 ton heat pump plus 15KW electric heat. The idea is that we run the house on the heatpump down to about 34 degrees outside temp, then depending on which is cheeper, switch to oil or electricity. You all might be supprised, that some places in the USA its going to be cheeper to use electric heaters over oil this winter. I have been watching the conventions. Sorry to say (as a life long republican)that the republican convention wenesday night speeches were so loaded with pander and lies, I was in awe. When the party that has been in power from 2000 to 2007 (congress/senate/presidential) says its time to go change things in Washington, and get the liberals out of power, my brain went "WTF?". They voted the current mess into existance, and now thru the magic of oratorical handwaving want to blame that all on someone else? Small children, pointing the finger at someone else, belive that blame and resposability will be magicly transfered thru gesture and word.....

Glad you finally saw the light, ol' boy. Gearhead (talk/contribs) 17:54, September 5, 2008 (AKDT)

I have to say I'm glad the summer is over and fall has started. It is awfully quiet around the neighbourhood with the song birds gone south but I look forward to the first frost and colder weather. As a winter project I've enrolled in a conversational French course at the local college to brush up on Canada's "other" official language. Au revoir!

I was pleasantly surprised to see you listed as a listener! Did I tell you about WWR? I don't think so... Eugene Hill is a good friend of Jim Kloss! They used to work together at Yahoo! BuffaloGrass: News

Gone to Nickel Creek - Sep 4, 2008 BuffaloGrass is going to Nickel Creek again this year. We missed last year, but will return to make our music with the great folks out there in West Texas. Several songs on our Gone to Nickel Creek CD are inspired from there, two in particular...Out Around Nickel Creek and El Capitan. Go to iTunes or CDBaby and check them out. A copy of this CD is heading for Whole Wheat Radio as we speak.

iTunes - August 16, 2008 BuffaloGrass can now be downloaded from iTunes. Go find our CD Gone to Nickel Creek.

Clips Available Online - July 16, 2008 We have some audio clips of some of our music now online. Just click the music section on our official website and listen.

Online Downloads - July 14, 2008 Well it was inevitable, but BuffaloGrass is going electronic. Working now with CDBaby, we will soon be up on many of the electronic download sites, including CDBaby and iTunes. We will let you know when that happens.

HOT buffaloGrass - July 8, 2008 BuffaloGrass has developed a wonderful relationship with the internationally famous Heart of Texas Chorus. We join with them on their fabulous "Great American Cowboy" show in which BuffaloGrass opens for them and then is joined by them on the song "Great American Cowboy." Come hear the other cowboy songs like "Back in the Saddle, Again," "Don't Fence Me In," and "Cool Water." We do two shows in Gonzales on October 4, so check back here for details on how to get tickets.

Much fun being had in the land of the Tatalina. My last 3 of 4 weekends have been out there, hiking & picnicking & trying to locate a good cabin site. The highway is in much better shape than I remember it from years ago, although once you're off the highway, all bets are generally off. More later...

Image:Bunny.jpg Image:Unknownbird1.jpg

Can anyone identify the bird? It was huge and scared me out there, LOL!

Looks like a Spruce Grouse. Scobey (talk/contribs) 09:43, September 1, 2008 (AKDT)

It's chest was really big, like a turkey's; and it's wingspan was big, like an eagle. I think it might be a juvenile golden eagle but I'm not sure. I know it's not a grouse. Denali (talk/contribs) 15:32, September 1, 2008 (AKDT)

Gorgeous! Cater (talk/contribs) 15:45, September 1, 2008 (AKDT)
Definitely not a grouse (head and other parts way too big). My guess is probably an eagle or hawk. Hoonah (talk/contribs) 08:49, September 3, 2008 (AKDT)

I had a simply superb vacation. Thank you all for allowing me the freedom to take it. And a huge thank you to the Council of Elders who did a flawless job holding down the fort while I was gone.

I'm going to be focusing on the web portion of Wheatstalk 2008 this week. Esther and Grace and some other local folks are helping with the logistics. It's going to be a ball.

After Wheatstalk, I will continue to depend on the wiki community to keep Whole Wheat Radio growing and vibrant as I curtail my involvement to pursue other interests, particularly gardening, writing and outdoor activities. I will be facilitating and educating whenever I can to show others instead of doing myself. This includes producing house concerts and on-air shows which I will no longer produce by myself. When I contribute time to Whole Wheat Radio, it will generally be in the realm of administration (keeping the books updated) and programming. As I've been communicating for the past two years, I hope to see WWR continue beyond my daily involvement. What direction this will take, or if it happens at all, will depend on this incredibly resilient collaboration that has grown around a love of independent music and a non-hyped, non-commercial, intelligent online environment to express it.

Thank you all for your continued involvement!

Jim

A few comments about iTunes. Not all music on iTunes is DRM protected, there's iTunes Plus music without DRM. I regularly buy songs there, because, for one reason, I can buy there without a credit card, but also because of DRM free songs. I don't want to advertise for commercial organizations but Apple's Steve Jobs took action personally to free at least a part of their music library from DRM, by negotiating with record companies. Also it's not so much Apple or the iTunes store who decides that music is with or without DRM, it's the artists and their record companies. Much of the music of alternative / independent artists on iTunes is DRM free. there are also ways to get around this copy protection, like burning it to a cd and rip it again. Thanks for the good info! Jim (talk/contribs) 00:10, July 20, 2008 (AKDT)

iTunes links

You probably noticed some of these hanging around. Here's the deal:

  • You click on the icon and you are taken to the iTunes store (Windows or Mac) where you can get a 30 second preview of the individual track and/or buy it for $0.99 - or you can buy the whole album.
  • WWR is supposedly going to make 5% for any purchases you make clicked through our link. Just like CDBaby, if you click, then no matter what you buy at iTunes for the next 24(?) hours, we get a 5% kickback.
  • Music you download from iTunes is crippled by "digital rights management" which is just a way to say you buy a copy and may or may not be able to play it on a bunch of devices. You probably know more about it all than I do since I don't have an iPod. Bottom line: if you like iTunes, go for it. Unlike CDBaby which I support 100%, you're on your own with Apple.
  • In the left-hand menu, if you see one, it points to the current song being played. So no matter what page you're on or what you're doing, you can click it and whatever song was playing when the page loaded will be displayed in iTunes.
  • Other places that you see one (songs coming up, songs just played, request shows, etc.) you can click it and it goes to that song on iTunes. Great way to get a 30 second snippet preview of songs before you request them! To hear the preview, just click on the song in iTunes.
  • CDBaby does sell entire CDs as MP3s without DRM (great description at this link BTW. We don't get a cut, but that's okay with me. CDBaby has always been a working inspiration to me as how a commercial independent music website can be run.

Let me know on my talk page if you have comments or opinions. Jim (talk/contribs) 22:56, July 17, 2008 (AKDT)

Hi Mr. Monkey,

Sometimes the I-Tunes link is available and sometimes not. I appreciate the ability to buy one song, but, there have been several times when I could not find the link? Thank you! Sharpston (talk/contribs) 09:51, July 28, 2008 (AKDT)

Hi, Sharpston. As you probably know, Jim is on vacation for the next few weeks. My best guess is that not all songs are available on iTunes and a link only displays for songs that are available. If you find a case where that isn't true, please provide the details for future troubleshooting. Thanks. Kelli (talk/contribs) 09:58, July 28, 2008 (AKDT)
Thank you, Kelli for the info - It probably was that all the tunes were not available on I-Tunes. Sorry to wait so long to thank you. Sharpston (talk/contribs) 14:43, August 5, 2008 (AKDT)

Mr. Monkey, how are you? I'm tryin' to add a tag to my page. Where the heck should I do this? When I click edit on the page I can only see the first part of the page. The rest of the page must be in different files somewhere, but where? I'm also trying to add a new topic to the discussion forum, and I can't figure out how to do that either. Please help, and if you decide to stop by, we always have some spare bananas. Gearhead (talk/contribs) 09:24, August 31, 2008 (AKDT)

Hi Gearhead. The first part of the user page is the only part you can edit and you may put tags there. The bottom part is system data that users don't have access to. Click on Edit the Discussion topics page for instructions on adding a topic. Kelli (talk/contribs) 10:27, August 31, 2008 (AKDT)
Thank you, Kelli. I have been hunting for the tags (if that's what you call 'em) that are used on the user pages. Had no trouble finding tags to apply to artists, CDs, and songs, but no luck finding the ones to use on my page. Where do I find them listed? Gearhead (talk/contribs) 10:54, September 1, 2008 (AKDT)
I believe they are all in Category:Listeners. I'm not sure if there is a better place to look, but I think anything under "Subcategories" can be used on user pages. I hope that helps. Kelli (talk/contribs) 12:19, September 1, 2008 (AKDT)

(From email) Hi. LOVE Whole Wheat! Just a couple quick questions, though. How can I change my user ID photo? I tried to upload another that I like, but that only went somewhere else. How can I find where it went so I can delete it from wherever it is? Thanx for your help. - Dwstringbender

Hi Dwstringbender. When you upload a photo to be used as your user ID photo, make sure the name of the image matches your username exactly. When you are on the upload file page, replace whatever text is in Destination filename with Dwstringbender.jpg (or whatever extension you need). See Avatar for more information. Don't worry about deleting photos. Unused photos get cleaned out every so often. I hope this helps. Kelli (talk/contribs) 07:13, September 3, 2008 (AKDT)

(From email) Please add my email address to my page.

(From email) Hi Whole Wheat Radio,

It appears there is a little confusion between two artists with the same name. On your page for "Terri Jo", I see a picture of me and a picture of another Terri Jo. My songs are listed but the bio is not about me. How can I help get the two of us connected with our respective and correct info?

Thanks for your help!

Hi. I tried correcting the artist photo and bio. Click here to review it. Please note that you are also able to make changes to the page. Kelli (talk/contribs) 10:21, September 2, 2008 (AKDT)

(From email) Apologies- - -I think I posted my desktop photo in the wrong place. Seems I am all thumbs when it comes to following instructions. Can you please find my desktop photo and put it on the right page? Lurv Carol

More kiwi people coming your way I do believe. Highlight of their trip except the rugged roads damaged their vehicle!

Chillita

Hi Chillita. I checked your Contributions and didn't see any desktop photos. Please try uploading your photo again and type {{Tag|Desktop}} in the description area. See Desktops for more information. Kelli (talk/contribs) 07:30, September 3, 2008 (AKDT)

Gearhead Hello, Mr. Monkey, In the instructions for adding a new discussion, the first is to post in an appropriate category. I quote: Instructions for starting a new discussion. 1.Save your discussion topic on an appropriate page. A talk page is usually where discussions should be placed. For example, a discussion about adding an Upright Bass tag could go on Category_talk:Bass". My qetion is in 2 parts - How can I most easily find the correct category; there are literally hundreds. It certainly is not efficient to hunt, and guess when it's been found.

Second: Using Wiki is it possible to bring up groups of categories that start with a specified letter? I.e. could one click "c" and come up with a list of Category|CD, for example, or "u" for Category|User?

Appreciate any reply you can provide. Gearhead (talk/contribs) 10:05, September 5, 2008 (AKDT)

For me, the more time I spend here the easier it is to find something. It will get easier. :) If you are looking at song tags, go to Category:Tags and you can use the menu on the top to go to a certain letter. You can also use the wiki search box and limit your search to the namespace (category, artist, ect.) you want. Clicking on Special:Allpages will give you a list of all pages and you can limit the list to a specific namespace (select "category" for your example and type "c" in "display pages starting at").
The instructions for adding a discussion are a suggestion in order to keep a bunch of new pages from being created. You can create a new page for your discussion if you can't find a good place for it.
