This lovely style of dance music originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. Original influences include: American rhythm and blues and rock and roll; and Caribbean Calypso, Ska and Rocksteady. The music is characterized by syncopated rhythms with a strong offbeat, known as the skank. It is played in 4/4 time with the accent on the 3rd beat. This diverse style of music has developed many subgenres, including: Roots reggae, Dub, Lover's Rock, Dancehall and Reggaeton.
