Welcome to my artist's page. I appreciate your interest in my music!

I started picking the guitar back in 1960 and just can't seem to get enough of it. I love guitars, but I'm not much of a guitar collector; I recorded my first 7 cds using my Martin D-35, because that's the only acoustic guitar I had at the time. But it's a good one! I recently bought a second acoustic that I expect you'll be hearing a bit of in the future, too: a Martin M3M George Martin limited edition. Mighty fine!

I'll cover an old standard now and again--whatever grabs my ear and sounds like it would be fun--but composing and playing new guitar music is my main focus. There aren't a lot of people writing music for flatpick/plectrum guitar--although I occasionally use an extra finger for a double-stop, I am not a fingerstylist and rely on my flatpick for quality control--so someone's got to pick up the slack! I approach each of my CDs like a set, varying tempos and time signatures, moving from lyrical tunes to agressive pieces, and throwing some duets into the mix for additional variety. Although I only perform solo these days, I have written a number of tunes for two guitars down through the years and continue to enjoy working outside the solo guitar box. But the majority of the music on my CDs is played solo because that's my main focus when I perform. I don't overdub additional parts on my solo pieces.

How did I get started in this business?: Playing electric rhythm and lead guitar (my lead sounded a lot like my rhythm, only louder) for an Iowa dance band in the early 1960s. Talk about fun! My fourth and last dance band (Moose and Squirrel) called it quits in 1976 and I moved to the Twin Cities to break into the acoustic music scene. I co-founded the City Pickers (a duo) and performed with that act for a number of years and then decided to wave good-bye to the life of a full-time musician, a decision I have never regretted. It's a terrible business, kids. I continued to perform solo and in string bands through the 1990s--just because music is a lousy business, doesn't mean it isn't fun!--and started to make my solo guitar cds in 2001. Recording and releasing cds is a blast, particularly when your sound engineer (Jerry Jorgenrud in this case) is someone you've been doing projects with since junior high. When Jerry and I sat down to first discuss these projects, we agreed that we wanted an "in your living room" type of sound: intimate, honest, and welcoming, but without the dogs barking in the background.

I've played with a lot of wonderful people down through the years and continue to love making music with my guitar. It's just plain fun!

You can check out my CD Baby web site to read more about my background and my music. Thanks again for your interest!
