Pamyua (pronounced /ˈbʌmjoʊə/ in English)(Yup’ik Eskimo for ‘end’ or ‘encore’) is an Alaska Native band that fuses arctic indigenous traditional music with Funk, World Music, Gospel, Reggae, R&B and Jazz. Their performance features unique Yup’ik Eskimo songs and dances from Southwestern Alaska. They describe their music, "The well-mixed sound re-interrupts what cultural music is all about. We're creating a sound that has it's own culture - it's African - it's Inuit. We have created a sound that will make you believe that there is an actual musical tradition for our mixed heritage."

Pamyua performs in many ways, one of which as an acappella group in which traditional Yup’ik and Inuit songs are mixed with their own unique R&B sound. Some of their songs incorporate throat singing, also known as overtone singing or harmonic singing. They also feature the hoop drum on some songs. Pamyua also performs with a full band including drums, guitar and bass where they expand their musical vision in various styles and arrangements.

Pamyua was started by two brothers to share the ancient stories of their people through music and dance. Stephen and Phillip Blanchett, who are of Yup’ik Eskimo and African American decent, quickly gained the attention from music lovers of all types. The third member to join the group, Ossie Kairaiuak, grew up traditional dancing in Chefornak, Alaska, a Yup’ik coastal village bordering the Bering Sea. Read more Kairaiuak bio Pamyua was then officially formed and became publicly recognized throughout Alaska as ambassadors of modern Yup’ik culture. In 1996 Pamyua met Karina Moeller. The Greenlandic Inuit singer joined the group and they immediately started performing as a quartet traveling internationally in Europe, Asia, Canada and the United States.

In March of 2003 the group was chosen to represent Native American music at the 45th Annual Grammy Awards at Times Square Studios in New York City. The concert was just prior to the release of their third album, Caught in the Act, which won Record of the Year at the 2003 Native American Music Awards.

  • I took this photo of Pamyua performing in Fairbanks in the winter of '08. Their sold-out show was musically diverse, totally charming and so memorable. The show was part of a celebration of the International Polar Year by the state university, and was introduced by the chancellor as a "total cultural immersion." Pamyua attracted at least four generations of Alaskans to this show, and entertained us all with their fun music and outhouse jokes. If you notice, on the left, Mr. Kairaiuak is wearing mukluks (warm boots) during this performance. His feet must have been HOT! If you are planning on attending a show, buy your tickets early!
