Now in their 33nd year of playing, performing, and recording music together, NATURAL HISTORY (Jared Shapiro, Barry Hyman, and Derrik Jordan) still enjoys performing on the edge.
With a world of sound at their fingertips, this eclectic multi-instrumentalist trio creates "instant compositions" without any pre-conceived material. Although most musicians wouldn't dare to go onstage without a plan, it's the way they've always played together. And in the process of playing together for more than three decades, they have developed their own distinctive vocabulary of sounds, unusual instruments, and ways of improvising.
Featuring cello, sitar, electric violin, kalimba, vocals, recorder, guitar, and a wide array of percussion, NATURAL HISTORY creates exotic soundscapes that draw from a whole world of musical sources, weaving a cross-cultural tapestry of sound. One of the most remarkable things about the group is that they improvise vocally and instrumentally at the same time, creating the illusion of more than three performers.
