Muriel Anderson was born into a musical family, which included a mother that taught piano and a grandfather who played in John Philip Sousa's band. She started playing guitar while growing up in Downers Grove, Illinois. Anderson studied classical guitar at DePaul University in Chicago and went on to study under Christopher Parkening and Chet Atkins.
Anderson released her first album, Music For Life, in 1989 and has since released six CD's in the US and three in Japan, two videos, and has authored numerous articles and instructional books.
She is the first woman to have won the National Fingerpicking Guitar Championship.
