Michael Brett was born on the Upper East Side of NYC and raised in the artist-influenced community of Roosevelt, NJ. It was in Roosevelt that he first fell in love with music. Living around him were many talented artists, musicians, & poets. Noted jazz teacher, musician & composer Laurie Altman was an early influence.
In his formative years, he regularly performed as a solo musician in various talent shows. While pursuing a bachelor's degree in communications, he was a student intern at various local radio stations. It is here where he realized that he preferred to hear his music, not his commercial copy, on the radio.
His first recording, the six-song EP done., was released in 1998. Combining rock/pop, folk, alternative with smidgens of jazz and disco, he drew musical ideas from such diverse acts as the Beatles, David Bowie, Brian Wilson, the Bee Gees, and even Parliament Funkadelic.
With his second recording Electrophobia, released in 2002, he decided to move in a different, simpler direction. Trading in the electric guitars and toning down the multi-layered vocal overdubs a bit, Electrophobia is an accurate representation of the rock-folk style he prefers. (He prefers to use the term rock-folk, not folk-rock, because he is more influenced by the Beatles than by Pete Seeger or Bob Dylan). Like done., the lyrics on Electrophobia are part dark, part whimsical, part sarcastic, but completely personal.
Since the beginning of the millennium, Michael Brett has appeared at venues all over the tri-state area, including Kenny's Castaways in NYC, the now-closed Broadway Central Café, both the Court Tavern and the Corner Tavern of New Brunswick, John & Peter's in New Hope, PA, Indigo Coffeehouse in Aberdeen, Lance & Debbie’s Wonder Bar and the infamous Stone Pony, both in Asbury Park.
Since 2002, Michael has been prouder than ever of the songs he has written. Through the Princeton Songwriters, a local chapter of the Nashville Songwriters Association, he has learned to hone his songwriting craft more. He is looking forward to releasing a new collection of original music in early 2006, where he will integrate different musical genres, everything from jazz to country-western, on one CD..
