Here's most of what really happened: I quit my last good day job in September 2001. I was living in Boston at the time, and found that I could scrape out a living by playing for tips in Harvard Square, and on the platforms of the T. (Mostly along the Red Line, between Alewife and Park St.) Busking led to bar gigs, which led to coffee houses and club shows, and an album called Your First Sweetheart (2004). I got a little restless, and so I started driving coast to coast, playing all kinds of places along the way.
After putting 100,000 miles on my car in two years, I decided to move to Austin, Texas, in March 2005. I promptly discovered that you can't make a living playing on the streets of the Live Music Capital of the World, so I got a temp job filing medical records. Good times! Hah. Well, not so much, really,
Luckily, I met Part Swedish Chris (a.k.a. the New Temp) in the file room. Part Swedish Chris has a recording studio called Canary Productions in his living room, along with two computers, two chairs, and Nintendo with old school Tetris. Part Swedish Chris has a photo on his fridge of Newbury Street in Boston. It makes me feel like everything has come full circle in a way, since the picture happens to be of the very block where I had my last good day job, and where I decided to give this whole music thing a go. And here I am again.
I started going over to Canary Productions to record some new songs. Since I hate to have to listen back to what I've just recorded, I tried to get it right enough the first (or second) time. The result is a new 8 song mini-album called Small Time Big Town. For now, if you'd like a copy, they are available by mail order. Please check my website lisabastoni.com or email me for info.
Soon after we finished recording, Part Swedish Chris moved to Louisiana, and I moved to Northampton, Massachusetts. I am excited to be getting my music legs back after a long, quiet year in Austin. Look for me back on the corners of Harvard Square, and performing again as part of the Gray Sky Girls, my folk-bluegrass duo with Naomi Sommers!
