Julie Rafferty writes, "Fairbanks, Alaska, has been my home for the last 25 years, and despite the brutal winters, I've found no finer place. I grew up in Seattle, ventured north to Alaska and worked summers in Glacier Bay National Monument and Denali National Park. Eventually, I settled in Fairbanks, which is the next "big town" north of Denali. Music has always been an anchor in my life, and I am delighted to say it continues to ground me in Alaska.
"I've performed folk, rock, cabaret and musical theatre in various venues and for the past 10 years, concentrating on singing jazz/standards. I've been a featured vocalist with trios, combos and orchestras, entertaining throughout Washington, Alaska and Canada."
In high school, Julie sang with the Cantorians as well as the Seattle All-City Choir. She remembers QAHS choir teachers "Brownie" - Eugene Brown - and later Roger Haapanen, who introduced the choir to jazz with Dave Brubeck's "Take Five," an abrupt change from the usual choral fare she had been offered. But it wasn't until almost two decades later that she found her love of jazz finally blossoming, as evidenced by the recordings on her CD.
After high school Julie ventured north to Alaska, working summers in Glacier Bay National Monument and Denali National Park. Eventually, she permanently settled in Fairbanks where she graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, married and had two children.
As a singer/actress in Fairbanks, she performed for many years at the Palace Theatre and Malemute Saloon in their raucous, humorous tourist shows. She's also been in various musical theater productions, most recently in My Way, a tribute to Frank Sinatra. Her credits also include various musical incarnations, including a folk trio, a children's troupe called Trina and the Triceratops, and as a featured vocalist with combos and other groups including the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra.
Unlike the broad humor and madcap singing skits of the Palace and Malemute Saloon shows, Julie's debut CD, No Finer Place, is done in an easy jazz style. There's no Gold Rush slapstick here, but classic "Lower 48" tunes such as "Haven't We Met?", "I Just Found Out about Love", "Let's Get Away from It All" and "The Nearness of You".
Despite the -30 degree winter temperatures, Julie says there's "no finer place" than Fairbanks, Alaska. Grizzlies "suffering" the current frrrreezing temperatures around Puget Sound may wonder how Julie can keep singing at temperatures over 50 degrees colder.
