Jim Watson, Tommy Thompson & Mike Craver

Jim Watson... founding member of the Red Clay Ramblers, currently tours with Robin and Linda Williams in Their Fine Group. Besides his recordings with the Red Clay Ramblers and Robin & Linda Williams, Jim has two solo CDs, Willie's Redemption and Don't Tell Me, I Don't Know. Both include O'Blurs Mike Craver and Bill Hicks on some cuts as well as many more of Jim's friends. Jim also performs with the Green Level Entertainers. For 20 straight years, Jim has ushered in the Christmas season with his show at the Cave in Chapel Hill. Before the Red Clay Ramblers, Jim recorded with the Hollow Rock String Band on their second LP.

Bill Hicks... continues to be active in music as well as the physical life of stone masonry. He and his wife Libby play contra dances around the southeast and various concerts and gigs featuring their wide ranging vocal interests: original songs, blues, swing, and harmony duets. Bill occasionally performs his original songs at solo venues (see performance calendar), and occasionally steps out with former original Red Clay Ramblers Jim Watson and Mike Craver to crank up the old model T yet again. Bill and Libby have a Copper Creek CD, South of Nowhere. Bill recorded a live show at the Cave in Chapel Hill a couple of years ago and self-produced a CD, The Perfect Gig, featuring his original songs and guitar playing in a solo context. He does occasional studio work with various musicians, the most recent being Chapel Hill's Joe Woodson. Bill and Libby teach occasionally at the Augusta Heritage Workshops, and--in the summer of '04--at Allegheny Echoes in Marlinton, WV. Bill is associate editor of the Old Time Herald. He has taken advantage of the existence of this website to start his little blog of opinions: Admit One Journal.

Mike Craver... latest CD, Shining Down (June, 2002) is Mike's third solo release, following Wagoner's Lad and Fishing for Amour. Mike also performs on both of Jim Watson's CDs. For 2005, Mike and NC author Clyde Edgerton have written a musical based on Edgerton's novel Lunch at the Picadilly with cast recording available featuring nine new songs from Mike. Other plays since Rambler days -- Bosh and Moonshine at the Gaiety Saloon, Oil City Symphony, which ran for a year and a half in the Circle in the Square Downtown and was awarded the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards; Radio Gals, which won the LA Ovation award for Best Musical l995 and was produced Off-Broadway in l996; and Wilder with Jack Herrick -- are now being performed around the country, often including Mike in the cast. Mike arranged the music for Smoke on the Mountain with Mark Hardwick and also arranged the music for the third play in the Smoke series, Smoke on the Mountain: Homecoming. Mike describes himself as a piano player, guitarist, songwriter, musician, actor, and he's also co-written a children's book Beaver Ball at the Bug Club.

Jack Herrick... is still going strong with the Red Clay Ramblers. The group gathers rave reviews for their work on stages across the country. Besides earning a Tony award for the Broadway hit Fool Moon, Jack has been involved in the creation of a number of other musicals over the years. He and Bland Simpson together have written and developed the musicals Cool Spring and Tar Heel Voices. Jack composed and produced music for the soundtrack of Sam Shepard's film Silent Tongue and has collaborated with Tommy Thompson on the music and lyrics for an off-Broadway play by Shepard, A Lie of the Mind. With Jack Herrick and Don Baker, he co-authored Ear Rings, a musical adaptation of Lee Smith’s Oral History. Tommy, Jack, and John Haber created Lone Star Love, or the Merry Wives of Windsor, Texas. Herrick, Simpson, and Doug Marlette created the musical of the comic strip Kudzu. Jack says of his work in Fool Moon: "My favorite moment is the first big laugh, whenever it comes. The audience doesn't know what to expect, and there's a hushed quality that never occurs again in the show. You can tell that people haven't laughed like that for years -- it sounds like an old machine cranking up. There's nothing like it." In 2003, Jack has joined with Mike Craver and Judy Cressida Wilson to coauthor and perform in Wilder.

Tommy Thompson ... passed away on January 24, 2003, after suffering from an Alzheimer's-like illness for several years. He last performed with the Red Clay Ramblers at the Carrboro ArtsCenter in September 1994. In addition to his legacy in RCR and Hollow Rock String Band music, Tommy’s credits include many theater productions. He created and performed the one-act play The Last Song of John Proffit. With Bland Simpson, he wrote the musical Life on the Mississippi, based on Mark Twain’s novel. With Jack Herrick and Don Baker, he co-authored Ear Rings, a musical adaptation of Lee Smith’s Oral History. Tommy, Jack, and John Haber created the Merry Wives of Windsor, Texas. Tommy and RCR provided the music for Sam Shepard’s play Lie of the Mind and his film Far North and performed in a second Shepard film, Silent Tongue..
