E. J. Hughes is an Atlanta Georgia based tenor saxophonist who continues to contribute to the art form of Jazz. Hughes was instructed and spurred by many tenor sax legends including George Coleman, Billy Mitchell, and Sam Rivers. Each encouraged him to pursue seriously this vast art. Hughes has also spent time in private lessons with Bob Berg, Jerry Bergonzi, and Tim Armacost who gave him a deep respect for the jazz tradition while encouraging him to develop an original voice on his instrument.In 2003, E. J. recieved his master's degree in Jazz Studies at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA, where he was employed as an instructor of jazz saxophone and advanced improvisation.
In addition, Hughes is currently instructor of jazz saxophone at Emory University. E. J. received his bachelor's degree in music performance from Valdosta State University, Valdosta, GA.E. J. has performed with Grammy nominee, Sam Rivers, in his Rivbea Orchestra, and performs and records with multiple Grammy and MTV award winner, Speech and Arrested Development. He was invited in 2004 to perform alongside Grammy winner, Joe Lovano, at Emory University.
While living in New York City, E.J. led a quartet of jazz musicians performing at the Copa Cabana Club and Sonny's Place, among others. As a freelance musician E .J. has worked with the Temptations, and various long and short-term gigs for Disney and Universal Studios Orlando Fla. Hughes has recorded studio sessions for various artists and corporations including Coca-Cola, and the Atlanta Braves.In 2005 E.J. released his latest CD as the leader of a jazz quintet. The ej Quintet has been noted for its strong soloists and original compositions. The new recording features Atlanta musicians who perform on the national and international jazz scene.
