By the age of 10, Darren was deep into his Uncle’s record collection. Regular listening included John Mayall, Jeff Beck, and Savoy Brown. Blues roots were planted early. Fascination with guitar solos and soulful vocals, combined with that constant groove, proved to be the founding threads to a young, aspiring musician.
After getting his first guitar at 14, Darren was soon immersed in the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. By the age of 17, Darren had played with local musicians at after-school jams and weekend parties. The band GSO was formed just a few short years later, with Rick Rhodes and Dave Carpenter. They soon became quite popular playing the local bars and house parties.
By the mid-nineties, Darren had defined his interest in traditional blues; influences at this time included Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and Buddy Guy. With the end of GSO, Darren picked up playing with other musicians in the area, continuing to pursue his career. In 1997, Darren met John McLean, a local up and comer on the blues scene. The two quickly became friends and formed their own band, Daily Bread. After playing locally for about a year with out much success, the two decided to work as a duo, rather than a band. The two quickly garnered recognition as the future of blues in the Calgary area. Acoustic porch blues became the norm here; the Delta was the big influence. read more.
