Craig Korth picked up the banjo at age 12, after his mother saw an episode of the Beverly Hillbillies and asked him if he'd be interested in learning how to play.

He did. Thirty years later, he's still playing. But Korth, a Western Canadian Banjo and Guitar Champion, is also a busy musician, who has performed for the past 15 years with Jerusalem Ridge, a mainstay on the acoustic music scene.

His other musical credits include performing and touring with his wife, Julie Kerr, as well as David Francey, the Billhilly Band, Tom Phillips and the Men of Constant Sorrow, Maria Dunn, Billy Cowsill and Ronnie Hayward.

Two years ago, Korth released a solo album, Bankview, that went to No. 2 on the charts on CKUA Radio. And he's looking forward to performing this summer with the Billhilly Band at the Tonder Festival in Denmark.

When he's not playing music, Korth loves to talk about it. An avid collector of vintage bluegrass instruments, he's also the host of Fire on the Mountain, a bluegrass program Sundays at 11 a.m. on CKUA Radio.

Korth hasn't always been a professional musician, however. Trained as a machinist, he spent 14 years as a firefighter in Edmonton, where he was born and raised. He says he still misses reading the paper, telling jokes and drinking coffee with his fellow firefighters every morning.

A few years ago, however, he followed his heart to Calgary, where these days, he says he's perfectly content to play music and spend time with Kerr and their two young daughters, Ella and Amy..

Wow! I'm shocked that Craig doesn't set set fire to those banjos, he plays them so fast! --Ruben (talk) 23:16, May 4, 2008 (AKDT)
