Amy Martin was born in Maquoketa, Iowa, where she was raised on a farm. Yes, with corn and a big red barn. Sheep too. And many other creatures, including two parents and an older sister. In 1999, she fell in love with and moved to Missoula, Montana. She has been making her living as a musician since 2000. She has released six albums and started her own independent label, Raven’s Wing Records.
When asked, "What is folk music, anyway?", she said, "To me, it's music that has an address and a hometown; it comes from somewhere, and it knows it. It speaks to its own time, knows its history, has hopes for the future. It has dirt under its fingernails and lines around its eyes. It hasn't had the crankiness washed out of it. Musicians are supposed to want fame and glory and billions of dollars these days, but that feels hollow to me. I just want to make music, and to make a life in music. My intention is to do my soul's work every day. I feel successful when I manage to do that."
She was named Missoula’s Peacemaker of the Year for 2004, and has raised $10,000 for women-run health and education projects in Afghanistan through the sales of her third album, This Fall. Amy tours regularly throughout the country, and has shared the performance and the protest stage with Pete Seeger, Indigo Girls, Bruce Cockburn, Holly Near & Cris Williamson, former U.S. Senator George McGovern, Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer, Slaid Cleaves, Lucy Kaplansky, Toshi Reagon, Cheryl Wheeler, and others.
