Kim Wilson of Beckley has been writing songs for years, all the while honing his craft on as many stringed instruments as possible. A couple of friends join him on his first studio recording and the result is "Alador."
The result is a combination of blues, bluegrass, and classical styles that is perfect for a lazy Sunday. Wilson is used to being a solo artist, and his self-reliance shows on the record. He plays guitar, mandolin, dobro, banjo, lap steel, harmonica and cello. Oh, and he sings. Marty Cole mans the drums, plays bass, and sings; Betsy Cole plays the keyboard and piano.
Wilson's voice sometimes sounds like Eric Clapton, with heavy reverb effects making it spacey. Premium cuts on the record include "Where Ya Goin' Johnny," "Nasty Blues," which has a, well, nasty sounding guitar. "Minor Infraction" sounds like a band that I would be reviewing for the site, but, with Wilson on the Dobro, it's a Spanish-sounding tune that stands out. "What Children We've Become" again finds Wilson on the Dobro. It's one of my favorite songs on the CD.
"Between The Lines" is a song destined for radio or "Mountain Stage" or something. Wilson pines: Love is what you leave behind/Truth is what you try to find/Lonely is the road that winds/Heaven lies between the lines. All the songs on the CD were written by Wilson. No covers.
In an e-mail, Wilson said that since Alador is mainly a solo project, the band doesn't play out much due to a lack of musicians. That's a shame. After listening to the CD, I would say that solo or with friends, Wilson has the talent to play on a bigger stage..
