The success of Luhta's debut effort is largely due to the emotional connection he establishes with the listener, increasingly bolstered by the introspective lyrics on every track. What's most striking is Luhta's ability to match his voice to the sentiment of each individual song. The vocals are refreshingly coarse on "Muckrunner Blues," and Luhta channels his inner Willie Nelson on "Talking Hunt." Luhta's voice drifts like a veteran troubadour on "Sweet William," with a maturity uncharacteristic of a 26-year-old. As a whole, the album is a throwback to simpler musical times: The acoustic guitar creates a semblance of sophisticated back-porch picking, and the occasional harmonica adds to the down-home, bluesy feeling of Luhta's tracks. The chords extract heartfelt empathy like that of traditional American folk songs. -- Caye Burry, The Cleveland Free Times

Feel the pain. Taste the pain. Hear the pain. (It's no wonder that Adam Luhta hails from Painesville, Ohio.) Adam has been writing songs since the beginning of time; incorporating centuries of experience - both tragic and comedic - into his songs. People talk of "old souls" and reincarnation. If these concepts do in fact exist, Adam is a VERY old soul who has been reincarnated over and over to bring us his debut album of songs. The melodies are familiar and the words are unlike anything you've ever heard. His songs will slice through you like a three foot sword entering your heart, going through your brain, and coming out the back of your skull. Feel the pain. I have always felt that songs about heartbreak have a healing power. Adam's debut album has that underlying healing power for any of us that have experienced life, love, loss, and pain. Hear the pain. There is a nun in the next room sharpening a knife for me too. -- DJ Brother Mike Cohen, November 2006, NYC

These are not songs Adam Luhta wrote about himself. That is not to say that they are songs he wrote about fictional characters. These people do, and do not exist. However, I get the feeling they aren’t overly concerned with the fact that we know. They may not exist in our time, but I wouldn’t dare look one in the eye to say they are timeless. Each one moves with a certain anonymity that makes possible the synthesis of their experience with our own. We aren’t simply being provided with narratives - this is a call to arms. The melodies sear the stories right onto your heart, and Luhta’s voice is the kind that you know won’t stay still - all while the sound of the guitar hangs on these qualities with a well-worn feel. One might quickly say it all sounds like this-or-that, but I wouldn’t advise doing so too fast unless you want to run the risk of exposing an ignorance to about 100 years of American music. The first time I met Adam, he had a great batch of songs. That was over ten years ago, and it seems like every time I blink, he has another great set. Although he ranks with the prolific, he does so with a virtue I most admire in an artist: meticulous attention to detail. Needless to say, this debut has been a long time coming. Somehow, it is simultaneously a long time gone. -- Mike Fekete, February 2007, Olympia, WA.
