Whole Wheat Radio is a homegrown grassroots online radio station originating from Talkeetna, Alaska. We are an off-shoot of the Wikipedia collaborative wiki model and use the same software they do although modified to our needs. Most things you learn here can be used on Wikipedia and vice-versa. If you are an experienced Wikipedian we encourage you to share your skills in support of the many truly independent musicians represented here.

Please click one of the "Listen" links on the left to hear what we are all about. The other links on the left are how you get around the site. Don't be afraid to click them - they'll take you to wondrous new lands. Yes, it's a huge site but you don't have to learn it all at once - or any of it if you simply want to listen. The choice is yours.

We are in the midst of our seventh year of live webcasting 24/7/365 and our forth year of presenting live house concerts to both the local and the worldwide internet community.

We are a non-profit, non-hype driven labor of love to which listeners have donated $42,167.69. Working musicians who've performed here at house concerts have brought in just over $20,000 for door receipts, CD sales and online tips ... 100% of which has gone right back to them.

We feature the music of 2,773 truly talented independent artists who appreciate the opportunity to have their 40,071 songs be heard on a funky, non-traditional webcast. We've had over 14,728,561 listens to the more than 710,202 tunes we've played. Listeners have purchased 2,994 CDs from CD Baby via WWR, generating $3,007 in referral payments for WWR.

We tend to appeal to grownups who don't take life too seriously - the average age of people hanging out here is 49 years old.

Oh, and the mysterious we that keeps cropping up is - you. You are the Whole Wheat Radio collaboration that makes everything fun, creative and independent.

The WWR website/wiki that you're looking at right now forms the basis of the WWR community. This site is being built by people just like you - 847 of 'em who've been active on the site over the last 4 months to be exact. It is constantly changing as new pages are added, and other pages are revised and edited.

It is a huge dynamic knowledge base of both independent artists and music that grownups like - and there's always something more to contribute.

Everyone is encouraged to contribute content. A good way to get started is to create your own User page and contribute your photo to the Listener gallery. Or, maybe you'd like to describe how you found WWR or maybe you want to request some songs to play shortly. While you're enjoying the music you can help organize the music library by helping to categorize whatever song is currently playing. Or, maybe you'd like to say "Hello" to everyone listening by calling in your own on-the-air phonegram that will air shortly after you hang up. There's always something fun to do while you're listening.

But ultimately, despite its cutting edge website and collaborators, the heart of Whole Wheat Radio is the independent music we play. If all the bells and whistles of this site are intimidating or just too much, don't hesitate to become one of our many silent listeners. We all relate. Music that moves you deep down in your soul doesn't need a computer keyboard to work its magic. Many members of the community listen frequently but seldom visit the website - and that's perfectly okay.

If you're a website fanatic, feel free to explore the site using the links on this page. When you're ready to start contributing, just jump right in. It may seem complicated, but editing a page is really pretty simple. Don't be afraid of messing something up. Changes made to a page can always be "rolled back." If you have any questions, post them at Ask Mr. Monkey.
